Nah, he just said that's what HE calls it. Good number of old fogeys still do that. They didn't start to franchise until well after Ruth bought it, though.

Of course, he did say it was IN Baton Rouge. Maybe, I'm spitting hairs, but in those days Prarieville was hardly even considered a suburb of the town.

I think it was circa 1983. Stayed there less than a year before moving to Constitution.

Ok I'll give him something to answer. What was the name of the restaurant on Highland at Airline that was knocked down to build the Shell Station? It was open twice and stayed empty for years. Pappajohn through John Goodman through the mirror and killed him in Everybody's All American. I can't remember this name to save my arse.

Earlier than that. It had to be closer to 1973.

Just talked to my roommate. I asked her how they get their tips from gift cards at Ruth's since we coulnd't at Dempsey's and she said the ONLY way the money comes off of a gift card for tip is by using a separate small machine that is not part of the POS.

We did not have that machine at Dempsey's, so this is why we couldn't receive tips from gift cards. Now, technically, someone could leave me their gift card and I could use it on a table that paid with cash and just pocket their cash.. but otherwise, we did not have the machine to take the money off of the gift card as a tip.

Just wanted to clarify that because I really find it hard to believe places are telling you they don't take tips on gift cards in order to force you to come back I assure you your server wants their tip more than they want you to come back

I thought that was at the old Oak Manor on Airline?

You thinking of Vince Sotiles? I thought that was where Ruffin's place is now.

No. It was where the Shell Station is now. Not Sotiles. And it's where they filmed the movies restaurant scenes. Other than the Frostop.

You said Chris's in Baton Rouge.

If you can't read the name on the damn sign, how is someone supposed to make a bet?

Did you even ever eat at Chris's on Broad?

The first Ruth Chris' franchise was located on Airline Hwy in Prairieville, which is now Southern Kumfort strip club. From there he moved it to it's current location.

when was that, sinatra ? i thought that was called the "wagon wheel" before it was southern kumfort .. it was a strip club then too .. that is attached to a motel and i thought it was built specifically to be a strip club .. i can't see ruth's chris putting a place adjacent to a cheap dive airline highway flea bag motel .. but i could be wrong ..

and, fwiw, that place closed over a year ago after that bouncer killed the dude in the parking lot .. just a tid bit of info ..

Here's an interesting read on the history of ruth's chris ...

LINK

here is an interesting part about BR:

quote:

One of her devoted customers moved from New Orleans to Baton Rouge, yet still kept driving in to eat at Ruth's Chris. Finally he complained that the drive was too much, and asked if he could open a Baton Rouge franchise. Fertel claimed in a July 1997 Restaurants and Institutions article that she did not know anything about franchising, but that she let the customer have his wish because she was a good judge of people. The first franchise opened in Baton Rouge in 1976, and the chain began to grow.

that is obviously t.j. moran they are referring to .. but it said it opened in 1976 ..
