Just made my first bulk hop purchase. Got 6.5lbs of hops and saved about $150 compared to buying everything at the LHBS.

I really need to do this.

Geez. I don't brew enough IPA's to justify 6 lbs. of hops. Though i do see the benefit of ordering in bulk.

Well that 6.5lbs was 8oz of 11 different hops and 1 lb of a galaxy. So I am able brew a lot of different styles with those.

I'm running a bit low on my Galaxy supply. Think I'll completely knock it out with this beer I'm brewing.

Currently build up some BSI Brett Drei for a brett pale ale that I hope to brew next week.

Waiting on my water report from Ward Labs, once I get that in I'm going to brew a Czech Pale Lager with Belma hops instead of Sazz.

I'm a sucker for bulk hops, especially when they're on sale. I don't make too many hop forward beers, but I have a few varieties I like to keep around for most of my beers, plus some random varieties. I have a freezer full of bags of hops.

Seems they go on sale on various sites quite often, and 12$-$15/lb isn't unheard of during those sales for lesser desired hops, which I actually desire. Hallertau, Northern Brewer, Sorachi Ace, and things like that. shite, even FF7C seems to not be very popular, but I find it a great blend for hop-forward beers.

With a freezer full of hops, a fridge full of yeast, and a garage full of grain bags, I can whip up a good number of beers on the fly and on the cheap.

I used up all my Galaxy hops last night, so I just ordered another pound of them (and Citra, because Citra).

Brew night went well last night. Actually measured the OG this time after grabbing a cheap hydrometer. 6 gallons of wort collected at 1.061 (was supposed to be 1.063, so I probably added a bit too much water, but whatever).

Will likely brew again tomorrow afternoon if I can get out of work early enough. Grabbed some sriracha sea salt from Red Stick Spice Company to use in my gose. Should be interesting.

Speaking of Hops, i recently renewed my AHA membership using one of the brewing network codes for 6 oz. of Mosaic. Well, i emailed because they never came in, and they replied back that they stopped that promotion in June, but would send me some other hops from their new promotion. Simcoe, Warrior (use both of these frequently) and Ekuanot hops.

Here is Ekuanot

Developed by Hop Breeding Company and released in 2014, HBC 366 features pronounced aroma characteristics and extremely high oil content. This variety bursts out of the spring soil in vibrant yellow and gradually matures to a deep green color by fall harvest. Aroma: Specific descriptors include melon, berry, citrus-lime, apple, papaya and green pepper.

Farnesene < 1.0% of total oil

Thinking of using some, depending on how much, in a single hop or 2 hop pale ale.

In comparison, here is citra's oil content.

It appears that Ekuanot is more comparable to Amarillo with less myrcene content. More peppery and herbal than citra as well. SO maybe this would go better in a brett pale ale or a hopped up saison?

That sucks. I got my Mosaic a lot quicker than I got the hops from last year's promo.

I wanted to brew a NE IPA last weekend, but my LHBS didn't have the yeast or hops that I wanted. Ended up pulling a 180 and brewed a traditional bock. Brew day went okay. Got a new kettle, so my Beersmith calcs were off. Had to add a pound of DME to hit the calculated OG. I'm going to need to get a couple of brews in on this new kettle to tweak my settings in Beersmith.

I currently have an amber ale and pilsner on tap. The pilsner came out much better than I expected. Considering that this was my first attempt, I would have to call it a success. It is a bit too floral, but very drinkable. Next time, I will cut back on the late additions of Saaz (1 oz at 10 min and 1 oz at flameout). I might cut out the flameout addition next time.

im sure at some point it was discussed, but how do yall keep a carboy ferminting in the proper temp range?

A long time ago i tried the whole fan + towel + water in tub thing but there has to be a better way, right?

I have had the equipment sitting around and was going to try this sort of proscecco recipe i had found.

I think many of us use a fermentation chamber of some sort. I have a chest freezer with a temp controller. It's probably the biggest step to making high quality Homebrew, fermentation control

Added round one of the dry hops to my NEIPA yesterday. Round 2 will be later this week.

Brewed a gose with sriracha sea salt Friday afternoon that's fermenting away now. Actually bought a hydrometer the other day, and nailed my OG on it. Seems like a waste of money.

I am currently on round two of dry hops for the West coast pale ale. I'll probably keg it up tomorrow, maybe Tuesday to give it time to drop out.

Not sure if you saw the latest BYO article but it has a good article on NE IPA. Had some stuff i never thought of before. Like how hop pellets are like little O2 sponges, so adding them during fermentation will reduce O2 exposure. Also talked about water makeup which i need some explanation on.

I know i've mentioned it before, but i think BYO has a psychic link with me. Every time i'm about to brew a style, the very next issue, deals with that style.

For example, my next brew (in a couple weeks) will either be a NE style IPA or a 100% Brett. Well, this months issue has the cover article on NE IPA's, and another article on 100% brett beers.

I added the first round about 60 hours after I pitched, with that intent. The second round will come later this week.

BTW, I ordered a pound of Citra and a pound of Galaxy from Yakima Valley Hops on Thursday morning, and they were delivered by noon Saturday. This is why I continue to use them for my bulk hop purchases.
