re: Is ADHD a hoax to keep psychiatrists in business?

And I'll admit that my experience happens to be biased by one of those states, Louisiana.
But, on the whole, I would suspect that more PCP, Family Practice and pediatricians prescribe these meds, than actual patients being followed regularly by child psychiatrists - I could be wrong and freely admit that.
And, regardless, it is being pushed by teachers, administrators and school psychologists on the parents to get the children evaluated and treated, regardless of whether or not it is warranted. And I still think that it is less than 1 out of 100 diagnoses that are valid. Billion dollar drugs require that you push them onto as many folks as you can. So, there is your motive from the top.

I believe it's a real thing, but I just can't get behind prescribing elementary school kids Am-fricking-phetamines for daily consumption. That is some satanic shite no matter which way you slice it.

Ah, you're full of crap. Haven't you been reading the comments of all the non-medical, non-psych, non-research, non-expert "experts" in this thread? They know--it's all in your head.

My wife has it and believe me, it's a real thing. Her thought processes will spiral all over the map in a split second.
She'll be talking about doing the dishes, somehow end up on the Civil War. Every once in a while I'll ask her to tell me how she got from A to B. It's freaking scary when she maps it out.
That just sounds interesting.
And everyone "has to focus to stay on task."

That's not ADHD, that's normal. Most people have limited attention spans.

This is something that people who don't deal with it won't understand.
To others, it's just being lazy and not paying attention.
To people who actually have it, it's an extreme burden.
You will never understand how hard it is to finish anything when you can't even keep track of what you were thinking 5 seconds earlier.
But I don't think it should be given to young kids except in extreme cases.

like it was said earlier, it's not a hoax/sham.... but it is WAAAYYYY over diagnosed, and many times it's to further line the pockets of those receiving government subsidies (Welfare/Medicaid)... a kid with "ADHD" gets more money per month than a kid without it, since it's a disability in the eyes of those that dole out the money....

How would you know you're feeling abnormal if you have no idea what it means to feel normal?
If this is a illness, do you recall a progression into it, or was it a sudden thing?
Do you believe that other people exaggerate their condition?

You think focus is something people are born with? It's something that's developed...don't develop it and you won't have it...unless you buy this pill.

And thats why I say its not a cut and dry didorder. There is a spectrum where everyone has a differnt amount of attention span. At some point (and its an objective decision on where the line is), it becomes a problem to the point that its worth medicating. It was worth it for me in school, but the side effects of the meds arent worth it in my professional life.
Trust me I was against it when I was diagnosed. I hated taking the medicine at first. But I was the kid who had doodles everywhere because he never paid attention. My parents required me to get my teachers to sign my agenda with what my homework was and when my tests were because I was never paying attention. I was the only kid that did that. Sometimes it is a real issue. And ultimately I ended up with an engineering degree, so the potential was there amd medication allowed me to get through a lot that would have been harder (not impossible though) otherwise.

I have it, it is real.
Not only that, we can tell my son has it, and he is still in the womb. The lady who did the imaging for us said he is 4x as hyper as the average baby. ADHA is a dominant trait. Only takes one parent to pass it on to an average of 15 out of 16 children

I believe the majority exaggerate their condition. And I know what normal is because of the medicine.
It's not about looking at your phone while you're supposed to do other things. In my case, I finally got checked out because in the middle of a shutdown in my area of the plant I left because it slipped my mind that we were shutdown. I just zoned out and "forgot". That's not normal when you're working a job you love and find interesting.

I will agree with this. It's not as common as some studies would have you believe.

ADD is a hoax
ADHD is over-diagnosed, but a real condition
both are used to enrich psychiatrists, pharmaceutical companies, and for getting welfare benefits.

What are you, the TENTH person in this thread to claim to have it?
I understand this thread does not constitute a scientific survey, but what does it say about a "disorder" if such a large percentage of people have it?

I dont know about them, but it is certainly real. My biggest way of telling has always been to ask them how medications like ADDERALL affect them. It is an amphetemine, so for normal people it will be an upper.
It puts me on the floor, knocks me the frick out.
