Doesn't do this to me or anyone I know who was prescribed it. It doesn't get you amped up for sure. I definitely never understood the people who would take it to go out to the bar as I probably would just sit in a booth and read the ingredients off of the label of my beer bottle. But to say it knocked me out would be wrong. In fact, one of the side effects that make me refuse to take it now is that I got terrible sleep because of it. It's like my brain doesn't know how to shut off when I'm on them. If I read a chapter out of a math book, it's all I'll think about all night and never go to sleep.
And to the question, how do you know what normal feels like. That's an impossible way to look at things. But I would say that a person that doesn't really have it, would not really get that much of a benefit from taking it. They are going to feel different for sure, but they aren't going to all of a sudden start catching on in class better because they were already paying attention. Those that need it, are going to see a huge difference. Now those just taking it because it's basically an upper that keeps them up all night to study, that's a different story. That'll help out anyone I guess and there's no real difference.

I have ADHD, and I can say with confidence that you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

I may not have a real disorder, but the pills are real. Psychiatrists have one hell of a product keeping them in business.

My son was diagnosed with ADHD about 20 years ago,but we decided to go a different route than meds. There's a Doctor Cave in BR that feels that the crux of the problem is food allergies. So many things are added to our food system today that were not around 50 to 100 years ago. She identified what he was allergic to and we altered his diet. Going this route is a good bit more difficult than the med route, but it worked out great for my son.

I have no doubt my middle daughter is ADHD but she and her mother would not accept this until she was in her late teens and too late to help her while she was in school.

Its real but also over diagnosed-- I think its also in some ways a learned thing or at least exacerbated by schools-- like someone else in this thread mentioned I was diagnosed and also pushed into gifted classes and I think the two at times go hand in hand-- really bright kids get bored way, way faster in elementary school since they learn everything so quickly which in turn kills their attention spans and hurts their study habits for when they'd actually want to study later in life.

My problem with adults has been that they use their "diagnosis" as an excuse for undisciplined behavior.
You talking about adults using it to explain the undisciplined behavior of their children, or adults engaging in undisciplined behavior (like hustling an Addie scrip from their doc)

Who goes to psychiatrists to get them? My frickin NP writes them.

The fact that so many in this thread claim to have it, or claim their children have it, tells me it's not a real "disorder". The fact that those same people say that other people exaggerate their condition or that the disorder is overdiagnosed only reinforces my conclusion.

It's something most of us have. Therefor, it's about as relevant as HPV.

It's a disorder but for the most part it's a man made disorder.
We didn't evolve to sit still and focus on one thing at all times but that's basically how our society works.
Just like blowing your wad in T-minus 3 seconds is considered a disorder when it probably made a lot more sense for a caveman rather than porking his lady for three hours waiting to get clubbed by a rival.

Its total BS. Its more for lazy parents and an excuse for people who are failures though than psychiatrists.

What trips me out now is all the adults who are suddenly ADHD and need their Adderall or Vyvanse after 30-40 years.
