A six year old is still making brain connections, learning language and social etiquette... and you had him tested for ADD?

I don't wish to be rude, but how in the world did you expect any sort of valid assessment of your child? Did he even have the capacity to intelligently participate in his own evaluation?

It's a hoax parents eagerly buy into rather than face the reality that they have a dumb kid.

My wife has it and believe me, it's a real thing. Her thought processes will spiral all over the map in a split second.

She'll be talking about doing the dishes, somehow end up on the Civil War. Every once in a while I'll ask her to tell me how she got from A to B. It's greaking scary when she maps it out.

I mean it's kind of a sham as in there is no definitive line of this person has the disease and this person doesn't. And I think almost anyone can benefit (as far as concentration) from the drugs that are prescribed. I was diagnosed in middle school. I had previously taken IQ tests and was put in gifted classes, but my grades still suffered. Parents looked into it and they prescribed me medication. At the time it was Ritalin and that didn't do anything for me. When I got to college and Adderall was big, it really took my studying to the next level.

Do I think it's a disease and I had the right to take medicine to be on the same level as everyone else.....not really. Am I happy I took the pills in college and really learned the engineering curriculum I was in (and never would have been able to otherwise)....definitely.

What are your thoughts on ED? Is it legit or is Viagra/Cialis overprescribed?

This is apples and oranges, though. A middle-aged dude talking with a doctor is making an informed, risk-reward decision.

Kids 5 and 6 are getting addicted to stimulants by their parents, teachers and health care providers - it's peverse, particularly as in there is an incentive for the providers and pharmaceuticals to push the drugs, no real push back on the clear, relatively undisputed overdiagnosis/overtreatment problem, so we have thousands, maybe millions of the kids being legally abused by the system.

So, I disagree with your analogy.

It is overmedicated but not a hoax. There are plenty of cases of legit ADHD and there are also plenty of cases mommy and daddy's precious baby isn't a genius so pump him/her with pills.

You can disagree, but they are both performance enhancing drugs -- with possible severe side effects -- that are unnecessary for daily life. We take them because they make our lives better -- they make us better.

Do I believe that young children should be prescribed stimulants like this? Not really.

But consenting adults should be able to get their hands on whatever they want to make their lives better and more productive.

It's a sham.

Obviously, if someone isn't interested in something they're not going to be focused and have a shorter attention span. There are some things 'like certain topics in school' that we just have to suck it up and get thru.

The problem is nobody want to 'suck it up' anymore and want to control their life with a pill.

I'm probably in the minority tho as I think the majority of 'addictions' are due to someone making an easy or bad decision due to their ability to be selfish and weak.

Cooking meth is a potentially public hazard. Adderall is produced in factories and disbursed at CVS.

To me, I find it in close relation to the gluten allergy crap. Though it does exist, few people truly have it, while many people claim it.

ADHD is extremely overdiagnosed and often the kids are treated to quell the complaints of parents with low tolerance levels and inconsistent discipline.
