After relationships with a couple of people who claim to have been "diagnosed" with that disease? infirmity? condition? illness? I am convinced that it's a sham.

Definitely not a complete hoax. Absolutely over medicated. We used to work with foster kids about 15 years ago I always found it quite a coincidence that every foster kid was also ADHD.

Bull crap.

It is very over-diagnosed, but it is a real thing for some people.

I'm a bit torn on this because my old man was a shrink and I used to believe that mental illness didn't receive the proper respect, but now I think the world has gone completely the other way. I do think that regular child hyperactivity is being overdiagnosed.

But the biggest thing that shocks me is the students cranking addy/vyvanse/etc. You see a few threads here a year about students upset they can't get their fix. One guy was freaked he couldn't compete in med school without it. What the hell are we becoming? I think SFP has said it's basically a PED that provides an unfair competitive advantage in situations and he's right.

No, rapid eye movement tests prove that ADHD exists.

Kids aren't the only ones being overmedicated.

My problem with adults has been that they use their "diagnosis" as an excuse for undisciplined behavior.

No but it's massively over diagnosed and treated with medication.

I believe hyperactivity and short attention span exist as normal points on the human peronality spectrum, and it's ridiculous we label it a disorder and fill them with numbing meds, instead of learning to manage and outlet it in productive ways

Why is someone else's medical condition any of your business? Why do you hate the mentally ill. You claim to be progressive, yet you are no better than your draconian overlords.

My wife has it and believe me, it's a real thing. Her thought processes will spiral all over the map in a split second.

She'll be talking about doing the dishes, somehow end up on the Civil War. Every once in a while I'll ask her to tell me how she got from A to B. It's freaking scary when she maps it out.

She hates the fact that her brain is wired that way, it's very frustrating. She has to really focus to stay on task.

But, in a LOT of cases, kids that are just high energy low discipline cases are diagnosed with ADHD so the doc can dope them up and the parents don't have to put any effort in to raising them.

Yep. Way over claimed, diagnosed, and medicated. But there are folks that definitely have it big time. Just have to learn to control it.

once you get used to the meds, it's hard to go about everyday life without them. So if you were a teen on Adderall or vyvanse, your now an adult on it. It just makes you feel better and gives you more energy.

As a teacher, I've run into the same thing. Kids have outbursts and show little self control in class and then blame it on their ADHD. They literally come into class warning me that they forgot to take their meds.

I don't think it's a hoax. But I think far too many parents shirk on the other side of the medication, which is working closely with children at home and teaching them. And then there are a ton of special needs programs too, for school. Takes a lot of patience and a lot of your time. But it comes down to how much do you love your child.

I think it's extremely over diagnosed in kids. It doesn't seem a coincidence to me that most of the "adhd" families my wife and I know seem to be the ones with the most disinterested/aloof parents. Kids take work, and attention, and consistency. Seems like a lot of folks don't get the memo.
