Not a hoax, but over diagnosed and used as an excuse to not engage in actual parenting.

Most psychiatrists are busy dealing with serious mental illnesses like Bipolar Disorders and Schizophrenia. There is such a critical psychiatrist shortage in Texas that most parents have difficulty finding psychiatrists to manage ADHD.

Also, it's easy to fake symptoms in order to gain access to stimulant medications for weight loss. Wife is a pharmacist, and in certain more affluent areas of town, she'll spend more time filling scripts for stimulant medications for women 25-45 than anything else.

That "disorder" is a result of kids not disciplined/handled properly while developing.

I don't know about psychiatrists, because, honestly, they seem more inclined to actual medicine and actual science.

On the other hand, schools, psychologists and pharmaceutical companies appear to have colluded to at least massively overdiagnose and overprescribe these drugs for this "condition".

I'm not denying that it may very well be "a thing" - but I would suspect that maybe 1 kid in 100 who is on the drugs is really benefitting. The rest are just getting addicted to stimulants at a very early age.

And, I'll use this opportunity to post the RSA animate version of Ken Robinson's "Changing Education Paradigms" - which I think explains some of the problems - it is almost 12 minutes, but if you're interested in either education or ADHD, it is a fascinating talk, entertainingly animated by the RSA folks.

The problem is that most prescribing physicians don't actually do a clinical investigation across multiple areas to see if the child actually needs medications or not. Parents can show up in a PCP's office and bully their way into getting a script.

Growing up there were a handful of kids with a serious enough level of ADD to be on Ritalin. I don't think those kids were faking, but I also don't think that in 20 years humans or our environment has changed so much that something a handful of people had is now something fairly common. It's definitely being over diagnosed and over prescribed these days. The same can be said of ADHD.

Rex, you remember GMB don't you? He said he had it and talked about it a few times. Think of it kind of like Dyslexia. I'm not trying to say it's a disability, just that for some people they process information in a different way than most. GMB actually talked about some of the advantages to it. It may not work out in our homogenized one size fits all world where everyone is expected to act and think the same, but I can see where people used to dealing with multiple trains of thought simultaneously can be better suited for certain tasks than people with a single thread thought process.

And, in defense of the parents, they are often prompted to do so by teachers and school officials.

Of course it's a hoax. Just like immunizations. Why use medicine when you can just let people suffer, right?

Over diagnosed, over medicated, and even worse it is used as an excuse by the children and parents.

I created ad campaigns for Strattera, a non-stimulant ADHD drug from Eli Lilly. Based on the research I read--about the condition itself, NOT potential treatments--I think ADHD is a real disease. The question of course is: what are the guidelines for diagnosing and treating ADHD? Here's where the controversy lies.

Research the "disease state" as the clinicians call it. I think you'll agree that ADHD isn't a hoax.

It's more than a sham, it's criminal. Consider a child of 3 or 4 being medicated for 20 years. What do you think that does to retard social development?

I don't know if it's a hoax or not; but I know this, we brought our 6y/o to a psychologist, PHD, not an MD, to be tested for ADD. He basically asked us and him some questions, took some vitals which lasted about an hour. We got our insurance payment notice which the guy charged $600...

As we were walking out, he tells me he often treats people that do the same thing as me, and if I needed any help to call him....

I don't know your wife, obviously, and I don't know what you might suffer through, but I don't immediately see an illness in the brain conjuring up different images while performing mundane tasks or in making connections between disparate objects or events. I think there's a real danger in interpreting creativity or a tendency to simultaneously process information as some sort of disorder.

What the hell are we becoming? I think SFP has said it's basically a PED that provides an unfair competitive advantage in situations and he's right.

Better living through chemistry. I'm all for PEDs. Adderall helps me fly through paperwork that would normally take me three times as long -- because I don't want to do it. It's not necessarily ideal in the social aspects of my business.

We're a results driven society, and an increasingly distracted society. The little pill helps.

What are your thoughts on ED? Is it legit or is Viagra/Cialis overprescribed?

Same thing.
