The TP reported that Judge Larry Green passed away recently at the age of 88.

Must have been Travis' lucky or unlucky day, if normally it would take an overt crime to be arrested in a Natchitoches library. I think it was the arrival of officer Thurman Miller that reversed the overwhelming odds.
I think the reasoning was that the jail time was not automatic, but at the judge's discretion. Of course in the end the judge discretely threw the book at him, so...
