LES DESERVES OUR SUPPORT (w/ updated hat stats)
Posted by PurpleGuy on 11/9/10 at 7:52 pm
(before I begin: I have been just as critical of Les as anyone else these past few years. After the Tennessee game, I had had enough and was ready to see him gone. But with time, wins, and some perspective, what can I say, I've changed my mind.)
CLIFFNOTES VERSION: We have one hell of a coach and he deserves our support.
It's been tossed around a lot this week that many of us owe Les Miles an apology. There's been the official "I'm sorry Les" thread. The national media is talking about how there may actually be a method to the madness. Hell, even Glenn Guilbeau said after the game that a lot of "us" owe Les an apology. There have been the other posters that combat this with it's just one game. And that's true. But when those same people make their arguments for getting rid of Les, they're not looking at just one game. They're looking at his last couple of years(which are actually better than people realize), and saying the program is trending downwards. Well, let's take a look at his whole body of work, and give credit where credit is due.
Les is 59 and 16, a 79% win percentage. So statistically, in every 4 out of 5 games that Les has stepped on the field, he's left with victory. Bottom line, the man wins football games. People right now like to argue those win totals and the win percentage by saying the numbers are skewed because of his first 3 years, where he won with $aban's players, etc.. etc.. The $aban's players stigma will likely never go away, but Les is in the middle of writing pages in history books with players and a team that is fully and uniquely HIS.
Say what you will about the man, but his record at LSU supports the fact he is one of the best coaches in America. Les has beaten 6 different National Championship coaches while at LSU and 7 overall. As Pat Forde pointed out, Les is 5-5 against Meyer and Saban, two coaches considered to be the game's elite. If Les breaks even with the elite, where does that put him? Laying to rest a bit more of the Saban's players stigma, not only is Les even with Meyer and Saban in head to head matchups, Les evened the scores this year with players HE recruited. This is Les Miles' team through and through.
Recruiting. There has never been any debate as to whether or not Les can haul talent into Baton Rouge. The man is a respected recruiting guru. But beyond the gobs of talent that Miles brings in, he brings in quality individuals, and coaches them accordingly. You don't see the problems at LSU that you have seen at Florida, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, North Carolina, USC, etc., in the past few years. Les holds players accountable to standards higher than the law. And if you break enough team rules, or break the right one once, you're gone. The Perrilloux situation cost Les a player, a season, and a lot of faith from his fan base and the national media. But the man stuck to his principles and 2 years later has LSU back atop the college football scene as the top rank 1-loss team. Because of the players he recruits and the way he handles them, LSU has a team that loves and respects their coach, and a team without the headaches being experienced by a number of other top programs.
You may not find a classier coach anywhere in America. Les does not run up the score on teams (he's only put 50+ up twice since he's been here). Much to the chagrin of his fan-base, he doesn't seem to be interested in "style points." He wants to win. Excuse me, he has a want for victory. And he gets them. Despite his "win ugly" approach (as some call it), the man has put more wins on the board faster than any LSU coach in history, and kept the losses competitive. For his 16 losses, he's kept the game within 2 scores for all but three of them. And this is a point many people fail to realize with Les. While he has lost 10 games in the last 3 years vs only 6 in his first three, Les keeps his teams in the game. 13/16 losses have been within 14 points or less; 11/16 - 10 points or less; 9/16 - a touchdown or less; and 5/16 by a field goal or less. Usually, LSU is in the game until the very last minute, again, sometimes much to the chagrin of the Tiger faithful.
Back to the original topic, do you owe Les Miles an apology? Maybe, maybe not. But, I think what you, what WE, do owe him is our support. For the past decade, LSU has enjoyed more success than ever and probably more than many ever imagined. I remember the thrill of the fan base when we made it back on the bowl scene in '95. In '96, The Peach Bowl would be the highest bowl we reach with Dinardo, and fans were jubilant. Fast forward to today, and we have a fan base that isn't satisfied with Capital One and Cotton Bowl appearances. It's BCS or bust. But when you put things in perspective, Les Miles has not only won at LSU, he's kept winning sustained in the toughest conference in America and maintained a recruiting base that will keep LSU winning long into the future. We need to appreciate the coach we have and the things he has done for us. If you're unhappy with the state of things, take a quick look at Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, and USC, all teams considered power houses at one point or another in the last decade.
Les Miles wins. He wins often. And, he wins with class. We have one of the most entertaining coaches in America. We should probably enjoy him. He may have a head scratching play from time to time, but he wins. Let the other teams worry about what Les is going to do or not do. You sit back and enjoy the ride. Look at his body of work. Look at his body of work compared to the game's elite and tell me if it doesn't match up. Les inherited a powerhouse program ranked in the top 5. And six years later, now look where we are.
Let's PACK TJ Ribs tomorrow night. He deserves it.

Make the tattoo look legit

Can anybody photoshop the tattoo on my face to look legit, rather than looking like it's on top of a bandaid? Thanks in advance

If everyone would read everything I wrote, I'm aware it goes on the saints board. It's on there. But with the amount of people who are both LSU and Saints fans that only visit the rant, and the number of former LSU players playing for the Saints, figured it couldn't hurt.
WHO DAT?!
by Bradford Smith
Dear Mister Goodell,
I'm writing to inform you,
Of a gross mistake in fact.
You're operating,
Under the delusion that,
The NFL owns "Who Dat?!"
In reality,
It is not yours to own.
Nor that of any football team.
It belongs to us,
The people of this state,
Particularly, New Orleans.
You then claim ownership,
Which is truly absurd,
Of our golden Fleur-de-lis.
If you ask our cousins,
If they owned it first,
Your answer will surely be, oui.
And try as you have,
To steal something of ours,
Issuing your cease and desist.
The only thing you have accomplished,
My friend,
Is getting us all pretty pissed.
We've waited for this,
More than forty long years,
A chance at football's nirvana.
Dampen our spirits?
In our time to shine?
I really don't think that you wanna.
I'll tell you a secret,
About all our people,
In case you still do not know.
We're stubbornly proud,
We do not like thieves,
And we thrive in the underdog roll.
And so now we thank you,
For fueling our fire,
And all we're about to unleash.
Miami will never be quite the same,
After Who Dats
Take over South Beach.
The schools have been closed.
Parades have been scheduled,
No matter the outcome or score.
For all the fans,
And the City of New Orleans,
This game just means so much more.
Pigs have grown wings,
Hell has frozen over,
Grown men have been seen wearing dresses.
You can't understand,
What all this means,
Unless you also claim our addresses.
And so now, in closing,
I'm afraid you can't have,
That which can never be yours.
"Who Dat" is more than words, Goodell.
It's a spirit
Emanating from our core.
Now, take your unfounded,
Unreasonable order.
Your claim has been dismissed.
And the next time you feel,
Like picking on our fans,
I ask YOU cease and desist.
WHO DAT?!
Side note: There are 22 stanzas. A double helping of "Deuce", if you will. Also, each stanza has a total of 19 syllables, my own little tribute to former LSU Tiger and fellow Opelousas native, Devery Henderson.

Feel free to send this to anyone you'd like. All I ask is that you give credit where credit is due. You can shoot me an email me at LSUpurpleguy@gmail.com

You're operating,
Under the delusion that,
The NFL owns "Who Dat?!"
In reality,
It is not yours to own.
Nor that of any football team.
It belongs to us,
The people of this state,
Particularly, New Orleans.
You then claim ownership,
Which is truly absurd,
Of our golden Fleur-de-lis.
If you ask our cousins,
If they owned it first,
Your answer will surely be, oui.
And try as you have,
To steal something of ours,
Issuing your cease and desist.
The only thing you have accomplished,
My friend,
Is getting us all pretty pissed.
We've waited for this,
More than forty long years,
A chance at football's nirvana.
Dampen our spirits?
In our time to shine?
I really don't think that you wanna.
I'll tell you a secret,
About all our people,
In case you still do not know.
We're stubbornly proud,
We do not like thieves,
And we thrive in the underdog roll.
And so now we thank you,
For fueling our fire,
And all we're about to unleash.
Miami will never be quite the same,
After Who Dats
Take over South Beach.
The schools have been closed.
Parades have been scheduled,
No matter the outcome or score.
For all the fans,
And the City of New Orleans,
This game just means so much more.
Pigs have grown wings,
Hell has frozen over,
Grown men have been seen wearing dresses.
You can't understand,
What all this means,
Unless you also claim our addresses.
And so now, in closing,
I'm afraid you can't have,
That which can never be yours.
"Who Dat" is more than words, Goodell.
It's a spirit
Emanating from our core.
Now, take your unfounded,
Unreasonable order.
Your claim has been dismissed.
And the next time you feel,
Like picking on our fans,
I ask YOU cease and desist.
WHO DAT?!
Side note: There are 22 stanzas. A double helping of "Deuce", if you will. Also, each stanza has a total of 19 syllables, my own little tribute to former LSU Tiger and fellow Opelousas native, Devery Henderson.

I agree. I noticed several times tonight where the guy on JJ's heels was the man Ciron was supposed to be blocking
If you want to pick holes in it, be my guest. The point was not and Xs and Os comparison. There are glaring differences, obviously. It's pointing out a few similarities and the overall feelings so far this season. Those being ones of frustration and underachievement, though the stats don't necessarily point to that. The feelings and frustrations right now are eerily similar to 2004. That was my point.
My thoughts on week 2 (long)

Thoughts from week 2:
History is said to repeat itself. And it may be that LSU is destined to play BCS championship games in New Orleans. And you know what? I’m ok with that. If we play for a national championship every four years, I’ll be a happy man. Winning one every four years is a bonus. That being said, I think this team is about two years away from being on that level again.
These first two games of the year are eerily similar to the entire 2004 season. We’re winning, but they sure don’t seem pretty to the naked eye… First game of the 2004 season, LSU was the defending national champion (though as Carl Dubois reminded us, Saban said we weren’t defending anything), playing an Oregon State (PAC-10) team that we weren’t supposed to kill, but a team we were supposed to handle. What happened? - a very frustrating and, if we’re being honest, damn lucky win. What happened after that? - A season of very frustrating wins, and even more frustrating losses (9-10 to Auburn and 16-45 to Georgia.) Mind you, we beat Vandy that year with the great and holy Saban. But folks, we beat them 24-7. Take away a bad snap tonight, and somebody please tell me the difference in the games. ONE… freaking… point - AKA - no difference. We beat some teams that year by big margins, but we didn’t DOMINATE the way LSU fans had come to expect. We only beat Troy 24-20. I remember sitting in the stands with my dad. He said the exact same things he and many others are saying now; “We’re winning. Yes. And even though the stats and scores don’t show it, GOSH these are some FRUSTRATING wins.” We were loaded with talent that year too, with some questions at key positions.
Fast forward to now. Seems like we’ve been here before. We traveled to Washington (PAC-10) last weekend and beat a Huskies’ team that I think end of the year records will show was a pretty good team. In case you haven’t heard, they snapped their losing streak today against Idaho, 42-23. But the one word, amongst the many, to describe last week’s game is FRUSTRATING. The defense, don’t get me started. The offense, I believe the word used was, vanilla. They attributed it to the play calling. LSU didn’t want to show much. They didn’t have to break open the play book to beat Washington. LSU was saving Russell Shepard. Etc., etc., etc… Fine.
What’s the word for the offense this week? Because, I don’t think it was the play calling this time. We put up 23 points, but it could have and should have been more. My biggest concern right now is the play of the big guys up front. They don’t seem to be getting it done, and the competition is only going to get tougher the rest of the year. We’re not able to run anything up the gut right now. I understand teams are stacking the box trying to make Jefferson go deep; but I still think we should be able to get some kind of push, and we’re not. On the pass blocking side of things, I can’t remember seeing Jefferson go deep at all this year. Several times tonight, he dropped back and was scrambling almost immediately. Some of this is on Jefferson and the vision he stills needs to develop, but a lot is on the O-line. They need to do a better job. Most everything else I see brings me back to 2004. LSU fans are going to have to go through some growing pains with their quarterback this year. I know that’s what we were supposed to be doing last year, but this was only Jefferson’s 4th start. You can see it in some of his throws that he’s got some work to do. But I love this kid, and think our future is very VERY bright with him back there. Think of Jamarcus in 2004. Rough around the edges, but loads of talent, he just needs some time to develop. (and before anybody jumps on me for this, I’m not saying JJ is nearly as gifted as JR, but I do think the JJ has loads of talent that, once developed, is going to be something special)
I told friends all week I was going to withhold judgment on the defense until after the game this week. For the most part, I liked what I saw. We gave up 210 yards, as opposed to 470. Vandy converted 4 of 15 third downs instead of the 11 of 19 Washington had. And if we could WRAP UP!... those numbers would be even lower. I think The Chief is going to do just fine in Baton Rouge. People were ready to run Pelini back to the Big XII after his second game for LSU, and that turned out alright I think. Give it a few more weeks, and the defense (including the d-line) is going to be solid heading into Georgia. We just need to have a little patience as the players and coaches get used to each other.
With that said, when all is said and done this year, I could see LSU heading to Florida for New Years Day. Orlando or Tampa, I’m not picky. I see 11-2 as a legit possibility, with 2 losses to Florida. And believe me, I HATE saying that, but Florida is so damn good this year. They’re the USC of 2005, and I mean that with all the Texas implications you can think of.
Apart from Ciron Black, I don’t see the key leadership that we had in 2003 or 2007. Again, I think we’re about 2 years away from that. Russell Shepard will be a junior. His talent is already off the charts (I can’t wait to see him fully unleashed). But if what they say is true about this kid, and by all accounts it is, his leadership ability and heart is rivaled only by some guy named Tebow. Jefferson will be a senior and our latest #1 recruiting class will be juniors and redshirt sophomores. I think our offense and defense will be something to behold next year, and I could be a year off in my two year prediction. But watch out for LSU in the 2011 season, because I see it ending once again in New Orleans. And like I said before, I’m fine with that.
A few other thoughts:
*LSU fans need to lighten up. Yes, we are LSU. Yes, we have LOADS of talent. But damn, we can’t win everything every year. Florida, USC, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, and now Bama (and 2-3 others in any given year) are all LOADED with talent. (We have to play two of those teams on that list every year.) We can’t all win it all every year. Somebody has to lose. Every fan base has the same gripes about the under-utilization of talent. That’s why we play the game. Enjoy it, and stop expecting the world just because we are LSU. If we’re going by talent levels alone, USC would have more national championships by far, than anyone else this decade. But last I checked, they only had one. Also, LSU isn’t the only team that struggles. Alabama didn’t pull away from FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL until the 4th quarter tonight. Ohio State lost and struggled against Navy. Oklahoma lost last week. Georgia lost to OK State who went and lost to Houston. It’s called parity. It’s the ups and downs of college football, and that’s what makes it so great.
*For years, the SEC west either went through Auburn or Baton Rouge. I know it’s painful to say, but things have changed. For the last two and at least for the next few years, it’s going through Baton Rouge or Tuscaloosa. Basically all that’s changed, is the Alabama location is a little more northwest.
*Ole Miss is in the picture again. But remember, they’re Ole Miss. They have these types of years every so often. They had one in 2003. Let them get it out of their system, and they’ll be back to the same old Ole Miss we know and love.
*Tennessee - ha ha!
*ULL - congrats on the win. I mean, it wasn’t Texas A&M all over again, but it wasn’t Southern either. You’re 2-0 coming into Baton Rouge. You should nice and unbearable this week. Enjoy it, I guess. It doesn't happen often

SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN

Something to Believe In
Author unknown
You know, in these dark days of the early 21st century, we are faced with innumerable problems.
Terrorism - War - Crime - Dogs and cats living together - Pandemonium - Alabama fans.
But underneath all that depressing muckety-muck,
there is a gold lining. No... a purple and gold lining.
And as we embark upon that glorious phase of the
moon we call football season, let me just share with you a few things that are important to me.
What I believe... {Men's chorus humming "Hey Fightin' Tigers" in background}
I believe in Louisiana State University, my alma mater and flagship of the great state of Louisiana
The place where a boy became a man - Without question, the greatest 6 years of my life.
I believe in LSU football - The purple and gold - The rabid fans - The pageantry
The sight of the team running through the North goalposts
The Golden Girls - The sound of the Golden Band from Tiger Land
The smell of Crown Royal - and occasionally vomit.
I believe in the most beautiful place on the face of the earth
Stately oaks - Broad magnolias - The Lakes - The Quad - The parade ground - The Indian Mounds
I believe in the history - Halloween night -The Rag - The Earthquake Game
62-0 - The Bluegrass Miracle - The 2007 Florida game
I believe in tailgating, I mean real tailgating - Red meat cooked over an open flame
Cold beer (Except after 3:00...that's when I switch to Crown.) - Pretty girls in camisole tops and students painted head to toe
I believe anyone who loves the Tigers has the right, NO, the OBLIGATION to express that love with outright, unbridled, fanatical, blood-curdling screams causing those around you to worry about your sanity - The kind where you have no voice left by the third quarter.
I believe those who do not yell should have their tickets confiscated - we have a reputation to uphold
I believe Gerry Dinardo was a nice guy and Nick Saban is a traitor.
I believe Mike, our live Bengal Tiger, is the baddest mascot in the land and PETA can kiss our arse!
I believe any fan of an opposing team who enters our stadium should be treated with respect at all times - But a little 'Tiger-Bait!' never hurt anyone
...and if by some miracle their team does well and they heckle me, I believe I have the right to remind them whose house they're in
I believe tears come to my eyes and goose-bumps hit my skin when the Golden Band takes the field
I believe in sultry autumn nights, pretty girls, smuggled-in alcohol, the student section, hot dogs, cheerleaders on Mike's cage, Chinese Bandits, Tiger-Bait!, Two Bits!, Hot Boudin....
Mike's roars before the game!
Chance of rain, NEVER!!!
I believe in SATURDAY NIGHT IN DEATH VALLEY
GEAUX TIGERS!!
I didn't write this. I don't know who did. One of my buddies showed it to me and I thought it was pretty good. I haven't seen it on the rant before, but I did a search just in case and didn't find anything.
