Maybe not worse, just...less?

Ruthless Rye

This an East Baton Rouge thing? Gnarly Barley is literally across the street from a church..

Ate there at least 2 times a week for several years when I worked at the guitar shop. They had the best wings I’ve still ever had to this day. Also best hamburger steak. BEST.
You guys have any recommendations for professional sanitary stainless welders? Want to get some fittings welded up. Had a "friend of a friend" who was supposed to be a good welder "do us a favor" and I'm sure you know how that went. He butchered my brew kettle. Rebuilding a new one and do not want any hack jobs. Willing to pay for quality.

Don't post much but had to chime in here. I work in D'Ville and Grapevine & Denoux's Meat Market are the best by far. Check Denoux's facebook page for daily menus. Open Tues- Fri with prices $7-12 for a plate lunch. If you ever catch the crawfish cornbread, get double sides of it.

Wings N More has the 2nd-3rd best chicken wings I've ever had. Decent burger.

Hot Wok is your standard value Chinese fare. The lunch combos there are large considering most are $4 & change. Very nice people. Chuck Lee's by the bridge when you want a buffet. Again, very nice people.

Chef's for fried chicken hands down.

Minnie's Place on Railroad Ave. Ribs on Thursdays. Do it.

The First & Last Chance is crazy expensive for the portions & quality you get. The hamburger steak is probably the best value. Or whatever they have for the lunch special. Club sandwich ain't bad. Fried chicken is good. Garlic shrimp is good, but for the $18 you pay, you can get pretty much anything at The Grapevine.

re: Sushi in Japan

So what makes Japanese sushi better than "American" sushi? Is it the freshness of fish or selection?

Well, freshness of the ingredients is an obvious key factor much like any other food, but I'd say preparation & the pureness of it in general has everything else to do with it aside from that, without sounding too lame. Most sushi chefs there spend years perfecting their craft and take it pretty seriously. For me, the simplicity of traditonal sushi is what made it better: the freshest of fish, perfectly cooked & seasoned rice, a thin brush of soy sauce and a pinch of wasabi when appropriate.

In a traditional Japanese sushi restaurant, you aren't offered any extra wasabi or a small dish to dump soy sauce in for dipping. Every piece placed in front of you is intended to be consumed as presented. You will get the most offensive of looks if you ask for a side of soy sauce or extra wasabi, or ask for them to cook anything. My wife was pregnant during our trip, and she requested everything be torched. They looked at us with the deepest despise, but reluctantly obliged. I'm not sure if Japanese women are told not to consume raw fish during pregnancy, but it didn't seem to matter to the chefs. It seems rather strict, and it is, but goddamn it's good.

I would think along the coast here, fish is pretty fresh.

It is, and I'm sure it rivals the Japanese, but we stuff, boil, grill, and fry the shite out of everything. I'm 100% sure we could have some of the most badass sushi in the world, but there's just not much demand for it here.

I hate saying it because I have a soft spot for Waka House, but I'm sure eating sushi anywhere in the southeast US is the equivalent of eating at Olive Garden for Italian...

Depends on what you are after. I'd put them up against Ichiban. But that's not saying a lot.

My wife and I toured Japan for two weeks in March. I ate the best sushi I will surely ever eat in my life and it wasn't at any fancy place. I have no regrets, and neither will you. You will never be able to eat sushi around here again without being disappointed every time.

We ate at Sushi Dai literally steps outside of the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo and highly recommend it. Just get there early. Like 5 AM early. We got in line at 7:30am and waited until 12:15 before we got through the doors. According to reviews, it's the absolute best value, and I cannot argue.. And quite honestly had no experience with good authentic sushi to base it on, but I recognized the quality and the flavors said it all. There was no arguing that it wasn't great and I am forever spoiled.

We also found that tiny sushi place Koyoshi from No Reservations in Kyoto. Jesus Christ. Best Otoro I will ever eat. Best a lot of stuff I will ever eat. No English. Just say "Omakase" and nod politely when they put whatever they want down in front of you. It's literally like eating in an old Japanese couple's kitchen at home. There was some important Japanese businessman in there with his trophy wife eating fugu that kept going on and on about how we lucky we were that we found that place.

There are much more expensive sushi restaurants there, but even the midpriced joints are probably 1000 times better than anything you will find anywhere close to here. Whether you know good sushi or not, you will know once you experience it. DO IT!

Yeah I'd have liked to get more than one to age one. I got the last one at Hokus.. and I'm lucky I even got that. I worked all weekend and work today so my odds of getting any in BR after work are pretty much nil; I'm happy and thankful for just one.

Ha, you're welcome! I got 2 of the last 3 they had. I almost bought all three, but I told the owner I'd leave one for some lucky person. :P

It took some will power not to buy that third.
