It’s also important for OP to make it very clear to his son that the chances of having a long-term military career as an enlisted Marine is basically slim to none. The pay is terrible and most of those who enlist won’t make it beyond E-4/E-5

It can be a great experience for a lot of people but can also be absolute hell for others. A lot of the kids who enlist in the USMC do it because they have no other options and don’t know what they want to do with their life. It’s why the demographics of enlisted USMC skews heavily towards kids who come from working class/low-middle class backgrounds with weak family structures.
Since your son is well-versed academically, I’d try to convince him to look at one of the service academies. They’re extremely difficult to get into and there’s a lot of BS politics in the admissions process, but you’re basically guaranteed a career in the military if you get accepted to one of them.
