What a surprise, A-Rod gets plunked. I guess that meeting Varitec had before the game really paid off.

What's the black strip on the Yanks' sleeves for? I know it's been there for ages, I've just never known why it's there.
They only wear it when a former Yankee dies. In this case it's for Bobby Murcer who died July 12 of a brain tumor.

This is an absolutely devastating game for the Red Sox. Its not only the fact that they are in the process of losing Game 2 of the series - its how they are doing it.
Boston’s biggest weakness is its bullpen. It has been since the beginning of the season.
The Sox just don’t have much pitching depth - great system for position players but thin on pitching.
Justin Masterson is the lynch pin of Boston’s pitching staff strategy for the rest of the year. They are completely depending on him to try stabilize the pen.
This is the second time the Yankees have seen him - and it looked like they had his strange motion figured out.
The Sox are asking a ton of Masterson. If he can’t stabilize their pen then they have no other internal solutions - no one in their minor league system is ready to step in to the majors besides Masterson.
The other part of Boston’s strategy depends on Clay Bucchholz. They took Masterson out of the rotation because he was needed more in pen. If Bucchholz pitches well in the rotation they can keep Masterson in the pen. But if Bucchholz continues having problems this year then they are in a bind.
The Yankees have made their move in getting Marte and Nady. They’re probably about to get Washburn.
Look for Boston to have to overpay to get Brian Fuentes or possibly Will Ohman. I don’t think the O’s will trade Sherrill in the division. Any way you cut it the Sox are going to need to respond - their pen is just not adequate.
Andy did a nice job adjusting to the strike zone, it seemed it was about as big as a postage stamp. He was getting squeezed.
Good to see the Yankees come around and hit with RISP. Looking to go 46-1 after the 6th...

Reports in Boston indicate that the Red Sox will put Manny in the lineup and if he asks out, he will be disciplined by the team. That could mean a suspension. The general belief is that Manny is faking his injury. The team had MRIs taken on both of knees yesterday (just in case he says its the other knee) before the game and made it a point to announce they were negative.
I wonder if this is the sequel to The Departed featuring Manny.

re: Yanks/Pirates Deal Reconfigured

The Yankees are sending RHP Dan McCutchen, RHP Jeff Karstens, OF Jose Tabata and RHP Ross Ohlendorf to Pittsburgh for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte. LHP Phil Coke and RHP George Kontos are not in the deal.
McCutchen was a decent prospect but Kontos has more upside. Losing Tabata hurts but you have to give up something to get something.
Nady and Marte are on their way to Boston. With Mo pitching the last 5 outs, if the game is close Marte may get a chance to close it.
Bottom line is that Nady and Marte are upgrades and the Yankees didn’t trade a single player that will impact their team for this year or next year.
Cashman did good.

Thaaaaa Yankees win!
I really thought coming into this series especially with the pitching matchups that we would just take 1 of 3.
Like our chances with Baton Rouge boy Pettitte tomorrow.

Top of 8th 1-0 Yankees and their bats having trouble again with RISP.
Longest outing Joba has pitched...7 IP, 3H, 1 walk 9Ks. Ump overeacted on the Joba ---->Youk pitch
Yanks bullpen is 44-1 with holding a lead after 6th. Looking for #45 tonight.
