Horrible talent evaluation.
Agreed. But not only by LSU.

You guys can use this to insult McMahon all you want, but this kid isn't an SEC player. He was highly rated and had a lot of opportunities. He just isn't good enough for this league. Anyone who actually watched the team knows this was a wasted roster spot.
If the spot is properly upgraded, that's actually a plus for McMahon. To me, digging in and insisting that these guys should work out would be a huge negative. McMahon is just trying to play the game of upgrading the roster each year. (So far, yes, it doesn't look like he's good at that game. But as a fan, I want to see him get better at it as long as he's here.)
Notice only Chest has stayed in the SEC, and I don't know that he's an SEC starter either. You watched him shoot, right?
I hope they all do well wherever they go, but I think we kept the main two worth keeping.

KM did the same thing in year 1 with the women. Why shouldn’t expect the same from McMahon?
That comparison is only fair if they'd hired Scott Drew. McMahon has to have a chance to build something. I don't know if he's good enough or not yet, but we shouldn't have expected Kim Mulkey results right away.

Yeah, true. But competition has gotten better, and they have more film on the team available now.
This is where I was hoping Mwani would really be able to contribute.

We have 2 players: Corey Chest ranked #88 overall and Mike Williams ranked #157 overall.
I think ESPN is a little higher on both. But I don't think it matters. We've seen highly rated players come in and do nothing. More important is getting an SEC-quality point guard or two from the portal, right?

Who would compare MM to BK, Mulkey or even Jay Johnson. Criticizing a mid tier coach for not bringing top tier talent at the last minute to a program that was gutted and had the cloud of sanctions hanging over it?
Exactly. It's going to take a little longer.

What about Efton Reid? He seems to be playing a few minutes a game for Gonzaga. He probably could be contributing for LSU, especially rebounding.

in the process, stretch the defense out a little more?
That's totally fair.
My main point is that I don't think Fountain is a starter on a good SEC team. Reed and Phillips might be? We don't know yet, but maybe it's time to increase their minutes and find out during SEC play. I don't think Fountain needs to be second on the team in minutes if he's having that kind of game and we're losing by 40.

Not to take threes and to hopefully get more than two rebounds in 21 minutes when there are so many balls flying around and hitting the floor?

I can accept this. But I think if you listed the SEC teams he would start for right now, you wouldn't reach five.

Yeah, that's essentially what I'm saying, only I'm getting down-voted for it, which is funny. I get that Fountain works hard and can rebound (sometimes). I do appreciate his work ethic. But apparently people here want him taking three-pointers, and I disagree with that.

When I see people offering who should be getting minutes, Fountain is almost always listed. Hill is really hurting us at PG, and getting an SEC-caliber point guard who can also hit an open shot (most likely from the portal at this point) should be the top priority.
But are you guys OK with Fountain going 0-for-4 from three when he has trouble with layups?
9-for-10 from the line is great. But two rebounds and 0-for-9 from the floor shouldn't be acceptable for a starter.
I like him. He plays hard. I like Hill too. But they're not SEC starters, right? (If you're asking what we should do instead, I guess giving Reed and Phillips more minutes is the only option and the only way to find out if they have potential. They lost by 40 anyway.)
Derek Fountain, 1st half vs. Alabama:
19:30 - missed three, down 3-0 (first LSU shot)
19:04 - turnover, down 3-0
17:32 - turnover, down 5-3
17:10 - missed three, down 8-3
12:42 - missed layup, down 18-9
9:30 - turnover, down 23-11
8:56 - missed layup, down 29-11
7:08 - missed three, down 36-14
