Warm and humid AF

Missed a big buck TWICE crossing the road around 7AM. Severe hangover definitely a factor.

ETA: open to suggestions on additional excuses, will need to be well prepared when I return back to the camp

If you're in the Baton Rouge area, Louisiana Nursery on 42 in Prairieville has a ton of Encore and normal indica azaleas right now and they all look great. I just bought several 1 gallons for $9.99

Tikka T3x can be had for $750 from Sportmans Warehouse in the standard synthetic stock/blued barrel Lite version. I'd grab one of those in 270, 308, or 30-06, slap on a Leupold VX Freedom 3-9x40, and call it a damn fine day.

ETA: this example would be on the higher end of things to start out with. All the previous recs are perfectly fine and maybe more cost efficient. Nothing wrong with a Savage rifle and scope combo to serve you for a few years until you figure out if it's something you really like to do.
I got my Boykin from Flying J Kennels just north of Texarkana AR. He focuses on Boykins but has a couple litters of registered French Brittany's right now. Good guy, reasonable cost, and takes good care of his dogs. His name is Michael Jamison, I'd recommend reaching out to him on FB.

re: Best .270 Ammo?

Grew up shooting Core Lokt 130gr from a 1980's Rem 700 BDL and now I shoot Federal Fusion 150gr from a Tikka T3x. Never had any issues with the Core Lokts, but the Fusion 150gr puts them down where they stand. Many variables you could attribute that to, but I think most shots on southern whitetail wouldn't see the difference.
For me, pace of play can make or break my ability to deal with the heat and humidity.

Back nine at Webble Beach(I know) today turned into an epic Santa Maria-level jam up and it quickly became miserable just sitting there for 20 minutes waiting to tee off every hole.

Also, I habitually take my glove off immediately after every shot and hold it up and out while the cart is moving. Keeps it relatively dry and playable.

re: Bow Recommendations?

I certainly can appreciate the buy once cry once approach, but I would just go spend $500-600 on a decent Bear or PSE ready to hunt package and see if you really are able to make time for it and get back into it if life is busy. The deer won't know the difference and you can get it set up to shoot very well for that price point these days. While I am no archery expert by any means, I feel like unless you are a dedicated bowhunter the buy once cry once approach is more effective with heirloom quality rifles than ever changing bow technology. If you did get back into it as desired, you could really dial in what you're looking for over the next year or two and put together a solid $2k+ machine.
Tikka T3x Hunter Stainless (if you like a wood stock) or Stainless Lite/Superlite (if you prefer synthetic) in either 270 or 6.5x55. I believe Sportsman Warehouse has both of those options available right now and they'll run you right around $1000. Throw some Warne medium rings and a Leupold VX Freedom or VX-3 on there and you'll have a fine setup. You could get a T3x synthetic with blued barrel and the Leupold VX Freedom for around $1000 together.

I also like the idea of a Weatherby Vanguard in 257 Wby, but ammo will be quite pricey and that gun will be much heavier than a Tikka. Those factors may not matter, but worth noting for comparison.
Id reach out to First South Farm Credit at their Thibodaux office (Ben or Tommy). I've dealt with them a few times for timber/hunting land purchases. Good people to work with and I closed with them recently, it'll be better than 10%, but keep in mind that interest rates in every loan sector are terrible right now and raw land financing is higher risk in the eyes of the banks, so set your expectations accordingly. The days of 3% interest land loans are a few years in the past.
I would highly recommend Black Creek south of Hattiesburg. It's a National Wild and Scenic River and largely inaccessible by motorized boats except small john boats, although they are rare. The upper reaches that are serviced by the canoe rental can get busy with day trips, but the stretches through the national forest east of Highway 49 are excellent scenery and quiet, with big sandbars for camping and generally good fishing.

There is also Red Creek near Wiggins. Almost just as nice as Black Creek, but surrounded by a lot of private land with less expansive sandbars. No canoe rental that services it to my knowledge.

There is Wolf River near Pass Christian as well. Very scenic area served by a small canoe rental outfit that will help you shuttle if needed. Mostly private land, but plenty of great sandbars to camp and good fishing. Less than 2 hours from Baton Rouge.
For authentic deep south hunting camp design, make sure to have 100 massive wasps that magically appear inside if the temperature climbs over 65 degrees. Said wasps will then need to disappear again once the cold front pushes through.

Not sure where you are located, but Joey Murphey Taxidermy in Chunky, MS does an excellent job on everything he touches. People come from pretty far to take their stuff to him. I've seen some full turkey mounts he did that looked really good.
I assume this is also the 4.0L V6. I had this same issue on my 2007 FJ Cruiser following the replacementof my alternator. I wasted money on new catalytic converters and all new O2 sensors to no avail. That combination of dash lights and cat converter or o2 sensor code is a known issue (all over Toyota forums) with no fix, except possibly a new computer. I drove it for over 100k more miles with no issue, ran like a top.
35 Whelen, 200 gr Core Lokt - 7pt

270 Win, Federal Premium Nosler Accubond 140gr - 8pt

I have a CZ 557 in 6.5x55 that I am itching to kill a deer with, just havent sighted it in yet even though Ive had it 2 years now. It is a heavy b*stard though

Online Passport Renewal

Posted by Duwayne_street on 12/28/22 at 4:16 pm
Has anyone renewed their passport online recently, as in the last month or so? I see where they offered a limited release online portal a couple of times in 2022, apparently with plans to roll it out fully in 2023. It's not showing on MyTravel dashboard yet, although we appear to meet all criteria, so just figured I'd ask and see if they maybe closed the window again. The website does not clearly state one way or another.

Haven't seen squat since yesterday morning. Yesterday afternoon and early this morning was eerily quiet in the woods. Could've heard a mouse fart in England. We always have erratic movement this time of year though. Doesn't really get fired up until first or second week of December.

re: Duck Roost Deer Processing

Posted by Duwayne_street on 11/19/22 at 7:59 am to
Deboning price was $35 flat per deer. I got straight ground deer, not mixed, and I think it was $2.00 per lb for straight grind. My order came out to about $130 with fresh sausage, breakfast sausage, and straight ground deer. Not bad compared to others in the BR area.

That's an awesome price for Chris', though it sounds like they may make their money on the deboning.
