Do you have any kind of personal relationship with your niece other than “that uncle she sees on holidays”?

If you do, I’d give her $100. If not, $50 is not inconsiderate.

I'd like to believe so even though being a teenager now we probably aren't as close as we were when she was younger. But that's just the teenage years in general.

I live in Florida and they typically come down here on vacation once a year. I'll typically spend a few days with them then. I'll typically visit my family back home at least once if not twice a year so I see them once or twice then as well.

Obviously we're probably not as close as we would be if we lived in the same city, but I definitely don't think she views me as "that uncle she sees a few times a year" either.
Seems like $75-$100 is the general consensus here. That definitely seems reasonable and something I can do. I do live away from my nieces but we're still decently close considering we live 700 miles apart and I only see them a few times a year.

In terms of my other question, do you think it would be appropriate to ask the other uncle and other aunt what amount they are giving?
Wow some of you all gave $350? That seems pretty high to me, especially since she will most likely be attending school in state.

Her other uncle and her aunt might be able to afford that but I definitely can't. Given it's a weird situation where my sister is 11 years older than me and my brother in law is 12 years older than me but the baby of his family. By comparison I am 35, the other uncle is 51 and the other aunt is 58 so very different life stages and financial resources.
Obviously still a few months away but my oldest niece is graduating high school this year (wow that makes me feel not young, lol). As I live away from the rest of my family I was looking at some flights today and thought about the topic of the expected "Monetary Gift".

Two sites I looked at gave a range of $50-$75. For those of you who have nieces and/or nephews how much money did you give them at their high school graduation?

As my nieces have another uncle and another aunt would it be appropriate for me to ask them what amount of money they are giving? I don't want to give too much or (more likely considering I'm the youngest uncle/aunt so I have the least money) come off as the "cheap uncle".
They never start on time. My guess is 8:00 is when the official pregame stuff starts. Kickoff probably won't be until 8:20 or 8:30.
I play tennis and love to watch tennis when I can. The Australian Open is down there in a few weeks. I wonder if these fires will affect the tournament or even cause it to be cancelled.

Looks like all of Melbourne is essentially on fire right now. Plus I can only imagine the horrible air quality.

Back in my early 20’s my weekends were defined by the outcome of Saints games. Now, not so much. Life in general does that to you.

Same here, back in my 20s and even early 30s I would be catatonic right now Probably even throwing things. I'm 36 now and I've just mellowed out a lot in general. I guess I've finally realized at the end of the day it's not worth losing days of your life over.
A lot of people are bringing up LSU and I do agree that LSU is a big reason why I think a lot of fans aren't as upset. We still have LSU who will be playing for a National Title.

One of the reasons I will always like college ball more than the NFL. Way more passion for the game, as the vast majority of players aren’t going to the league, and they aren’t making millions.

Plus in college even if you're an elite player on an elite team you might have 1 or 2 chance to get into the CFP and compete for a National Title. If you're an elite player on an elite pro team you might have a 10 year window.

Like you said there's no doubt come next Monday the players of the losing team won't be laughing. You'll be seeing players on the ground crying who will be inconsolable.

Well, that’s not depressing at all.

But it's true though. Sure Brees might be disappointed but he has a pretty awesome life. Part of me can't blame him for not being in a fetal position after losing a game. Just saying nowadays the fans care about winning more than a lot of the players.

I didn’t even bother putting my Saints gear on today. I barely bothered to turn the game on at the end of the first quarter. Never felt like driving to watch it at the bar. I knew the outcome would be a loss, but like a self-loathing star wars fan, I tuned in anyway to find out exactly how they were going to break my heart. Turned out they couldn’t break what was already broken because it simply didn’t matter to me.

This describes me so much today it's almost scary. Like you I didn't feel like driving to a bar to watch it (which is something I've always done for playoff games) and since I watched it at home I didn't even bother putting on one of my Saints jerseys today.

Like you after the Vikings went up 13 - 10 I knew they were going to lose and part of me just didn't care that much. I'm thankful but also sad about how much last year broke me.
That's something I noticed years ago. As fans were mad at losses, these players are out there laughing and hugging each other. It's because at the end of the day they are filthy rich playing a game knowing they get to live a life that vast majority of us can only dream of.

Drew in a week or two will be in San Diego or on some tropical island on vacation with his family while us fans will be back at work. The jokes on us.

I'm just numb to it at this point. After so many heartbreaks u just become used to it. I knew this was a loss in the third quarter.

Same here, I was actually switching between watching the Saints and catching up on The Mandalorian because my mind was thinking "yep, I've seen this before, this was a loss".

Like others said, maybe this doesn't hurt as much because I don't think I truly ever believed this was a Super Bowl team. Especially not after the 49ers loss. Last year truly was a Super Bowl team.

100% in agreement. The no call broke me. I’m somewhere between a casual and die hard fan now. Idk what you call that. But I’m moving on with my day now. Just don’t care enough to sulk

Same here. Maybe it's being more mature but it's just not worth losing it anymore and being pissed for at least a week.

I would categorize myself the same way. I still think I'm more into it than a casual fan but I'm definitely not the crazy die hard I used to be.

Like you it's over, move on with my day.
I think this all goes back to last year. Like many Saints fans last year kind of broke me. I think it made me realize I care too much about grown men who make millions playing a game who are going to be smiling and laughing leaving the field win or lose.

This whole year I could never get as excited as I used to after a big win. I watched most of the games but didn't go to a sports bar like I used to and wasn't too disappointed if I missed a game. Even 2 or 3 years ago I would've absolutely never missed a game unless I just had no choice.

In some ways it makes it better. I'm honestly not at all upset. A few years back I would be losing it right now and I'l be pissed until after the Super Bowl. Honestly today I just turned it off and could care less. I think part of it for me is also because it was painfully obvious we weren't going to beat the 49ers and probably had little chance to beat the Packers in Green Bay.

It probably also doesn't help that my check engine light came on in my car last night and I could be looking at costly repairs, lol. That distracted me and my heart just wasn't in it today.

Anyone else feeling the same way? Just numb to it?

An aftermarket catalytic converter is around $150 plus installation. $250ish at a muffler shop

Worse case scenario this is probably the route I'll go. I take my vehicle to an import shop and they've always done a good job and are usually half of what any stealership would charge for the same service.

Could also be the O2 sensors are bad

But would this also cause decreased engine performance? I definitely feel like the engine doesn't have as much pep as it did just a few days ago. The vehicle also isn't accelerating as quick either.
Figured I would get some car advice from members on the forum. Sadly there isn't any type of car forum so I decided to post it here.

I have a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder 190 hp 2011 Accord EX-L. I'm the original owner and the vehicle has 158,000. Vehicle has been spectacular up to this point, never any major issues besides the occasional battery going dead.

Always on top of oil changes and fluid changes. Coolant was changed at 100,000 miles as recommended. Valves were adjusted last year with a new valve cover gasket. Serpentine belt was replaced 2 years ago. Essentially I've always been on top of getting maintenance done.

I noticed on Friday that my engine performance seemed down (I know my car very well and could just feel that something wasn't right). Last night while driving my check engine light comes on for the first time ever.

I go to Advance Auto Parts today and they pull the code. P0420 was the code. After looking it up it indicates an issue with the Catalytic Converter. I'm guessing the Catalytic Converter has gone bad and will need to be replaced.

Of course we all know this is a bad repair. Probably looking at $1500-$2000 and after a medical issue late last year causing me to miss a few weeks of work I honestly don't have that type of money to spend.

So I wanted to ask you all this, lets assume for this scenario I don't care about polluting the environment (I do but maybe not at $2000). My state doesn't do emissions testing so I don't have to worry about it failing that. Besides the environmental issues would this cause me to destroy my engine? Again I will say I notice decreased engine performance and not as much responsiveness in acceleration (both tell tale signs of the converter) but it still drives smooth. Is there a reason to replace it soon besides environmental reasons? Will a bad converter eventually hurt my engine and cause even more expensive repairs?

I'll never understand why the Rose Bowl dictates so much. They held up the process of getting the BCS and now they frick up the dates of the semi finals. To be fair, the Sugar did as well.

The hard on that ESPN has for it is really weird and overdone.

I completely agree, they control too much. The reality is ESPN has the leverage over the Rose Bowl.

Just ask the Rose Bowl to move up from 5 p.m. to 4 p.m. That's really not asking a lot.

Honestly at this point I'd love to see them kicked out of the NY6. Replace them with the Holiday Bowl. The Rose Bowl would last for awhile but over time it would start to wither and die. At the end of the day though the Rose Bowl needs the NY6 and ESPN far more than the NY6 and ESPN needs them. The Rose Bowl needs to be reminded of that.

An 8pm start time in New Orleans is perfect for visiting fans. Quit crying.

Except Bowl Games are more about ratings and fans watching on TV than they are about the crowd at the game. That's true for all sports.

Are you saying a 7 p.m. start time in New Orleans would somehow make the visiting fan experience horrible? Does an hour really matter for fans at the game? Heck I think it'd be better, more time after the game for fans to get hammered, lol.

As long as the TV contract money is coming they don't care if anybody's watching in the seats or on TV.

Tell that to the sponsors paying for air time. I'm sure they care.
