no the movie wasn't, the character of DL was born in 1966. therefore he was almost 18

no he was definitely almost 18, his characters date of birth is December 18 1966

Daniel was not 16 the character of Daniel LaRusso was born on December 18, 1966. the movie was taking place in 1984. the tournament takes place in December of 1984, making Daniel almost 18 years old
