Were you diagnosed with HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy)? My FIL was diagnosed about 2 years ago. He tried medication, but inevitably needed surgery. He had his myectomy in July at Tufts in Boston. He is a new man. He was able to get in touch with the HCM foundation and they helped him find a surgeon at an HCM Center of Excellence. There is also a wonderful facebook group for those with HCM and their families. Feel free to send me a message should you wish some more information.

My FIL also went for a second opinion as the news struck him much like it did you. Don't let someone else's feelings dictate how you take care of yourself.

When my own son struggled with an undiagnosed illness, I apologized to his Dr. for seeking a second opinion, but her response was great. She said she was glad to have the help in figuring his case out and that it's never an insult to pursue the absolute best you can for yourself.

Prayers sent.
I used the lighter cubes when I first got my BGE, then went with a buffalo lighter (like a torch/battery powered blowdryer combo), and finally settled on propane torch and an old blow dryer from my wife.

For the more impatient among us, the propane torch and blow dryer method can get you up to temp pretty quick.
I had every intention to make this hunt but a new little one threw a wrench in the works.

I'll vouch for Dave. He's good people and I'm sure it'll be a great trip.

re: RTIC cooler sale

Posted by LaPappy on 2/1/17 at 9:03 am to
I just used live chat on RTIC's website. The nice lady i chatted with said the White 65 wouldn't be back in stock for 3-4 weeks. She also could not say they'd still be on sale when they were back in stock.

I also asked her which cooler size was their most popular seller. I was surprised when she said the 45qt.

Just thought I'd share what I learned.
Anyone else notice Rock Hill Farms is no longer listed on Buffalo Trace's website? I know it still exists.
Tiger1242: There is a guy who posts in here under the name SingleMaltScotch. He'd probably be your best reference for a scotch recommendation.

In his absence, I'd suggest Talisker as a moderately smokey scotch but still packing great flavor. The Talisker 10 year is good, but I like the Talisker Storm and the Distillers Editions the best of their bunch.
I've wanted to get some Rock Hill Farms for quite a while, although I haven't seen it on a shelf locally in years. Where are you guys finding this at?
When is the next Bourbon Society of BR meeting?
I was really looking forward to this years Bourbon Society Christmas Party, but my son is supposed to be born the day before. I'll have to catch you gentlemen next year.
I have to agree that their 18 year sherry finished single malt scotch was phenomenal. From what I had read it seemed to basically be Macallan 18 finished in a Sherry cask.

My only problem is that it is no longer there. When I asked one of the guys working in that department, he said it was a one time thing. I wish I would have bought a couple extra.

I grabbed a 1.75 of Weller 107 last time I saw it. I have an extra if ya need. Just let me know.

Im planning on getting Lagavulin 16 next, is there another islay that y'all recommend instead?

Lagavulin 16 is my favorite Islay. I had another good one at Lock & Key made by Kilchoman, but I can't remember exactly which one.

Ardbeg Auriverdes was also quite good.
I don't post in here much, but I've read every page. I plan to make it tonight. I told a buddy who's into whiskey and I believe he is coming too.

Is there some sort of format or agenda to go over tonight or is it more of a grab a glass of something and socialize sort of event?

Looking forward to meeting some of you.
I agree with you on the barrel proof. I have a bottle and it is quite good.

The only true rye I have on hand is the Willet 6yr barrel proof rye. It is good but not earth shattering. I had a buddy pick up a bottle of this years Whistle Pig Boss Hog. He gave me a sample and it was excellent. It is the best rye (in my very limited exposure) that I've had. I don't know if I'd be willing to pay the asking price for it, but it was certainly good.
Yesterday I picked up a bottle of EH Taylor Single Barrel. I poured up a glass of that and a glass of the EHT Small Batch to compare.

I know this board seems to favor the small batch but I honestly liked the Single Barrel a little better. It seemed just a touchy more silky on the palate and had a bit more depth to it. I certainly enjoyed the Single Barrel, but I'm also not sure it's worth the extra $20 a bottle when it can be found.

Anyone else try these two right next to each other?

One other odd thing recently, I really enjoy ETL. Lately I don't seem to be getting the usual sweet flavor that I'm used to. For some reason, I've been tasting more of the rye in it lately. Anyone else ever notice this with old standbys that they come back to?
Petey, how is that 1792 store select? I was tempted when I saw one the other day, but held off.
Gentlemen, I've been lurking this thread for a very long time. This thread is what got me to finally create a username to join the discussion. I have learned quite a bit from reading your thoughts on good bourbons.

Does anyone else use the Carmer method when tasting?

I read about this last night. I was a bit past the point of really being able to try it last night, and I'm curious to hear how it has worked for others as well.
As another poster said, stick with lump charcoal and a plate setter is a must for indirect cooking methods.

Leg quarters or chicken breast sound like a great first run.
I have a large and enjoy it thoroughly.

We washed the grill grate prior to the first cook but that's about it. The egg seems to season itself with use.

It takes a bit to get comfortable adjusting the vents to achieve your desired temp. Overall it works great tho. It made cooking more enjoyable for me. If it can make a novice cook like me look good, then I'm sure it can really excel when someone with skill uses it.
