Is this a dude that usually gets things right?

The owner of mgoblog is Brian, a guy who is probably the single most trustworthy Michigan-related source out there. He has a good reputation and wouldn't risk it if he didn't have some decent information.

I still doubt that Harbaugh is coming, but if Brian's saying this, there might actually be some smoke there.

I honestly do not think Michigan can lure any of the coaches you mentioned away from their current programs. No disrespect, but in recent years there has been less turnover in general by the coaches' choice.

I wouldn't disagree. If we strike out on all of those guys, I'll accept the hire. As long as it isn't Schiano or Adazzio

That "Final 4" list is BS, dude. It includes Sean Payton

Serious candidates for the Michigan job are Mullen, Mora, and Miles. Longshot would be Harbaugh. Betting market seems to think the latter is a possibility, but I doubt it. Mullen would be a solid hire, although I prefer Mora to be honest. I'd take Les over either of those guys, though.
No Michigan fan thinks that Payton is a serious candidate.

Here's what Brian from mgoblog had to say about the baseless Payton rumors:

quote:

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE HOT DOGS? Sean Payton strongly denied any rumors that he'd be somewhere other than New Orleans, correctly dubbing them "silly":

Asked at his press conference today about the possibility that he might step down following this season, Payton said, “Absolutely no way.”

Payton said he is aware that there’s been speculation that he wants to leave New Orleans, but Payton added, “It’s silly. It won’t happen.”

I don't care what insiders said X or Y about Payton's availability. The ghost of Bo could appear to me and tell me Payton was the guy and I would say "he has an eight million dollar contract until 2018, Bo—y'all be crazy." If the Saints decide to pull the ripcord on the best coach in their history thanks to one bad year and eat what I assume is a simply massive buyout, then we are getting to the realm of vague plausibility. Until that highly unlikely event transpires, "silly" is the kind way to put it.

Nobody knows what's going on with the Michigan coaching search, and anybody who tells you differently has some beachfront property up for sale.

The new AD has been very tight-lipped, and the search firm will allow him to keep things under wraps.

I'd take reports like this with a grain of salt.

I wouldn't bet on any news soon. The new AD Hackett wants to land Jim Harbaugh, and while this probably is a long shot, he'd be committing professional negligence not to make a full out effort. Keep in mind the two are good personal friends.

If Michigan gets a clear indication that Harbaugh isn't coming, they'll quickly move on to Mora or Mullen. I'm a huge fan of Miles, too, but I don't think he'll be offered. Harbaugh hasn't shut down the speculation so far. The longer this process continues, the better Michigan's shot at Harbaugh.

Honest question...why is Mora considered a much better choice? Stanford has beaten UCLA 4 times in Mora's 3 years and I only recall maybe one of those games being close.

One of the reasons Hoke got fired is that he fielded a completely inept offense, and Shaw's overly conservative playcalling gives most Michigan fans nightmares. There's also the issue of coattails - he's winning with the guys Harbaugh brought in and his winning percentage has declined since he started at Stanford. So there's lots of skepticism from people who fear a parallel with Hoke - who started 11-2 by winning with Rich Rod's guys - then tanked.

Mora, on the other hand, has taken strides to resurrect a moribund UCLA program and the feeling is that if he brings his recruiting talents and player development skills to Michigan, where he'd have more resources, he could do well. He's seen as more enthusiastic and more dynamic than Shaw by a mile.

+1000.

The most reviled candidates among Michigan fans right now are Schiano and Shaw. I share in the revulsion

But I think a Shaw candidacy is a moot point anyway - the California college coach actually being mentioned recently in connection with the Michigan job is Mora at UCLA. He'd be a much better choice, anyway.

I haven't heard any talk down here about anything serious between Michigan and Mullen. Is there a belief/evidence up there that either party is interested?

There's definitely interest on the Michigan side. I'd say Mullen is one of the top choices. But I don't have any insider information and haven't heard anything out of Starkville. One potential hangup is that Michigan's offensive personnel don't fit Mullen's scheme, so the transition costs would be high.
The new AD is trying hard to kill the whole "ties to Michigan" thing. Mora has some limited ties; according to mgoblog, "Former M OL Courtney Morgan is on Mora's staff, so he could be a point of contact. [Michigan insider] Sam [Webb] also points out that Mora and Mike DeBord were on the same Seahawks staff($) five or so years ago."

As far as I know, Mullen has no ties. But it shouldn't matter - Michigan does seem to be genuinely trying to find the most qualified candidate this time around now that Pizza Man AD has been canned.
Almost nobody in the fan base wants Schiano.

Just take a look at mgoblog, which is basically the only Michigan site that the fans take seriously. There's almost universal opposition to a Schiano candidacy over there. Beyond the "unicorn hires" that most fans acknowledge are long shots, the names that are seriously being floated as top-tier hires are Miles, Mullen, and Mora. The rest of the field isn't in the discussion at this point.
