re: MJ Morris NC State transfer Qb
Posted by ddeon on 12/11/23 at 11:36 am to Sissidog02
Ha! As a Nc State alum who also enjoys LSU football, trust the guy who mentioned family drama. I don’t love disparaging decent kids, and things were mostly fine at NC State until they weren’t but he’s probably right on this one. After taking over for a struggling transfer QB in B. Armstrong, and playing marginally at best this season, the team started to find its footing yet after 4 games he up and quit on the team. From there, vailed social media messages of him leaving, staying, and justification for quitting on the team flowed from his camp the rest of the year.
Thankfully the team galvanized and won out in his absence. Its widely understood that the team helped him pack up his s*** and he was encouraged to go. I suppose you’ll take a little drama for a great player but he was not very good, and considering the type of QB play LSU has come to expect from the last couple transfers, this isnt your guy. He’a not a great runner, and his accuracy and decision making was inconsistent. I had a similar post back when LSU hired Matt Canada who was previously at NC State and was chastised because of all the positive “buzz” around him. Buyer beware here, once again!

re: The one thing that concerns me about the Kelly hire. . . .

If Kelly had all the pieces to check all boxes at ND he wouldn’t been coming to LSU. As much as LSU needs him he also needs what LSU brings to the table. Talent, speed, and playmaking to go with his disciplined, tough nose, fundamental approach. He is easily the best Coach on that sideline since Saban. The roster and culture need a reboot but he’s gonna be terrific in time.
This one is quite simply terrific!! We all know the culture around the program and to ever fully realize LSU’s potential, the program needed a no nonsense, sound, hard worker. Kelly is exactly what LSU needs!
Lsu on the other hand is exactly what Kelly needs. He’s never had the volume of skill guys that he’ll find growing on trees in La. He’s never had the all-in for championship path that he’ll have at LSU. He wants a real title shot and he knew he’d never have the muscle to pull it off at ND. Perfect collision of two groups matching needs with opportunity.

Being nominated for doing a great job one season makes him elite? So all the other years he was average mean nothing? He did a nice job with Pitt one year but he is certainly not an elite offensive mind in CFB. To suggest Canada is elite is really laughable. There are guys who have fathered complete trees of other successful offensive coaches who themselves have been unstopable year after year at multiple schools. Canada has been both passed over and fired by the two coaches who know him best. Sorry that is not elite! But you'll soon see...
Is that Saban's wife with the erruption? BEcause he'/ the happiest coach in the SEC right now. The one school that has the talent to make him nervous will be dinking and dunking to HB's in the flat. Canada's O will never beat Slick Nick
re: Helfrich or Canada? Who should be our OC?

Briles!!
For what its worth there are two guys including myself from Wolfpack Nation on this forum and neither of us prefer Canada. Keep in mind what the major frustrations were with CLM. Perhaps Canada will be willing to open things up and attack all areas of the field, but thats not who he has been. In all other aspects he's rock solid.

re: Why was Canada fired from NC St. in 2015?

JB is a mystery to me honestly. While at NC State he missed long on his 2-3 deep attemps most games. But the shots were few and far between most games. My biggest problem with our downfield attack wasn't usually the lack of go routes. We rarely threatened the mid-to-deep middle of the field despite having capable options. One hand usually washes the other so it became increasingly more dificult for us to run and get the easy short stuff against the better teams because they didn't generally have a between the hash threat. To his credit, Canada is full of fire. The guy is definitely motivating and a tough SOB. But some time the job calls for a route combo that makes the safety flunk a test and I didnt see a ton from him in that regard.
re: Seriously just hires Briles or Sark and let's go win some Ships'

Someone else said it above, Briles is the one true "Fear Factor" hire. I would be so jacked to watch him attack SEC defenses in Tiger Stadium. Briles has a little stank on him but the media always loves and forgives a winner and it would be quickly forgotten. The safest guy on staff is the guy who needs to repair his imagine. Please Coach O, all I want for Xmas is my two front seats (to watch Briles' O)
Lsu absolutely has more talnet than NC State and Pitt. Which is why in my opinion Canada is a guy worth considering much further down the list. The freaks that LSU has had and will hopefully continue to get need to be exploited. Canada wouldnt be a disaster but neither was CLM. Yet we were all left tbinking we could/should do more particularly with playmakers downfield.
Again, I didnt say Canada was awful. Pitt was a much improved offensive team u der Canada. He was at NC State 3yrs and most teetered between tolerating and being frustrated with the O when it came to the 50/50 games. Stats don't tell it all. NC State had a 2 year NFL QB Canada's last 2 seasons. Also lost our best two OL and started a transfer QB this season. So its fair to say the O declined this year from last but I'm not comfortable saying cause/effect was the departure of Matt Canada. Having seen Phillip Rivers, Russell Wilson, Mike Glennon, and Jacoby Brissette over the years, tbe offense always declines when you lose that caliber player/leader.
I posted this on another Canada thread but will share it here as well as a NC State season ticket holder and Tiger fan who saw 3 years of Canada.
While Matt Canada is not an awful option at OC, there were some major hangups at NC State. The shifty short passing game and gimmicks are awesome and were effective against many inferior opponents but Canada's inability (with a mid round NFL draftee Brisette) to get the ball to WR's/TE's down the field and over the middle parts of tbe field was a major issue. We were essentially a good run team and good in the flats. Low turnovers and good time of possession and really good against teams we could control the LOS. But anytime we faced 3rd and 8+ it felt like and insurmountable down and distance. Ultimately I don't think Doeren was pleased with a gameplan or two down the stretch which underutilized some of the key guys in defeat and he had to do something. Canada was the better of our two coordinators but there were certainly a lot of people who were glad to see him go.
In my opinion, you're not gonna be bale to play toe to toe with the Gumps with a Mickey Mouse O. You need some creativity and some big boy schemes to attack all areas of the field against the better teams. LSU is gonna push around 75% of opponents anyway. This hire has to be about the other 25% and I pray they look elsewhere efore Canada.
