Michael Haines, with the City of Alton Parks and Recreation Department says the hole began opening up in the early morning hours and it was caused by a mine collapse deep underground.
"I think it started around 6:30 a.m. this morning at the surface, it gave entirely way around 8:30 a.m," said Haines.
New Frontier, a mining company, was able to communicate with someone at the surface level to make sure the field was clear at the time. There have been no reported injuries.
"Luckily, we didn't have anything going on at that time of the day out here at the soccer fields either," said Haines.
