Would you rather do Thailand or China for 3-4 weeks mid Dec. to mid Jan?

Asia is a really large place...the flight from Hong Kong to Thailand is not immaterial.

I loved Thailand when I went this past summer. I went to Bangkok and Chiangmai. I could have spent another few weeks in Thailand alone.

Doing just Hong Kong isn't really doing "China" so I'm not sure what you are getting at. Hong Kong is just a city. If you have a few days then sure it works on the way to Thailand. There are no nonstops to Thailand from the US so you have to connect somewhere anyways no matter what.

I'm flying SFO-HKG-BKK on to Laos for example next year.

Probably one of the shorter distance connections he could have if he is flying via HKG from the mainland US.

Other connecting airports are going to be in Tokyo, Singapore, Taiwan, Kuala Lampur, etc.

Ah snap.

I had to deal with this myself slightly varied.

I was trying to choose between China and Myanmar/Laos. Since my wife wasn't going it eventually ruled out China since I was finding too much cool stuff to do.

Tough decision, I could make arguments for both but China is gonna be cold as shite that time of year. Spent a day in Shanghai in January 2016 and it was like 40 degrees. That was on the way back from Thailand which has perfect weather that time of year.

So I say do Thailand because of the time of year. It's just going to be too cold in China I think.

For example, Yangshuo in southern China the high will be 59 degrees on average in December and lower in January.

i'll let the board know how it goes and will be back with a million questions

I already know I'm gonna ask where in Thailand I need to be for NYE.

Depending on who you are, that is going to be Bangkok or Ko Phangan.

Just a hunch.

I've been in Hong Kong in January and the temp wasn't bad at all. Now Beijing at that time was extremely cold. It was cool to see frozen waterfalls and temples covered in snow though. A ski jacket and layers were enough to keep it enjoyable.

Mostly yes. I was headed to Sanya a couple weeks ago where it was going to be sunny and 80+*. My plans were changed to Beijing en route. Let me tell you that it is damn cold in Beijing in even November and jackets/clothes are expensive there!

I would rather visit Thailand than China any day of the year.

This.

I lived in Hong Kong for a year and love the city tremendously. That being said, December isn't the best time to visit Hong Kong, as it is generally damp and cold. The pollution from China tends to be a little worse, as well.

But I would recommend Bangkok and Chiang Mai in December in a heartbeat. The beaches in Southern Thailand are usually full of eurotrash this time of year, but as a 25 year old you might have a blast.

As someone that’s never even been to Thailand, I’ll add another vote for this.

Thailand. Spend much more time in Chiang Mai and on the beach than Bangkok, which is basically a much larger more smelly New York but with nicer people.
