We will be heading to Glacier National Park for a week in August, but we're starting to think that a full week may be a bit much. Of the two towns listed which one do you think would be better to visit for 2 days? We definitely want to do a guided fly fishing trip one day, but other than that food/beer/walking the town is fine by us.

Flathead Lake Brewing Co. down the road in Big Fork is a pretty decent stop as well.

Seems general consensus is Whitefish is the better option. However, before starting this thread I thought the two were 3 hours apart not 20 minutes.

My brother had lived in Kalispell for a few years before moving to Whitefish. Just got done skiing up there and staying with him. Theyre both just as scenic as you'd want with their proximity to Glacier but you will find more to do in Whitefish. I'd recommend doing the Alpine Slide at Whitefish Mountain Resort if you'll be there in August and looking for something to do outside of the park. The Great Northern bar is a fun place in downtown Whitefish if you have any kids that can play ping pong, pool or shuffleboard while you wait for your meal or drinks. If you were to want finer dining Jagz is the place they took us out to eat in Kalispell, but they live on the edge of Whitefish and it was a short drive.

Have fun. If youre lucky Going-to-the-Sun road in the park will be open and you can hike to Hidden Lake. That is by far my favorite hike in the park that I've done in the few trips we've made there in the summer. If the road is open make sure you drive all the way through the park either beginning or ending in Polebridge.

Thats the most scenic drive and fyi if you were to want to do that hike at Logan Pass to Hidden Lake no matter the weather or time of year you'll be hiking through snow. You can only get there though if Going-to-the-Sun road is open (closed due to snowy roads year-round sometimes).

we stayed in a cabin in big fork on the river. The neighbor was a retired stunt man in hollywood.

Dude had some awesome shite in his house to say the least.

He invited us to go trolling at whitefish. The lake is incredible. we didnt catch anything but was awesome regardless just riding around on the lake.

another cool story about this trip...

We also ate a restaurant overlooking the marina another night. I cant recall if was in whitefish or if it was over looking the marina on flat head lake.

We were seated next to Phil Jackson, Jeanie Bus and his brother who looked just like him. This was before Iphones and my brother got his gf at the time to snap a pic of phil jackson with a disposable camera. She accidently hit the flash button in the process and boom it was obvious as shite.

My dad was so pissed. When Phil was leaving, he got up and apologized to him. Phil told him to tell the boys to come outside and we will take a real picture. It was pretty cool. He said this was his favorite place to eat and that shaq rented it out one year for his bday.

he apparently has some monster house near there

That entire area is beautiful so you really can't go wrong. Going to the Sun road is absolutely breathtaking. If you want to get away from Glacier for a day, look at Missoula. It's a pretty cool town about 2 hours south of Glacier with a couple of good breweries (Big Sky and Bayern).

Whitefish is more of an old mountain town vs. Kalispell which is more suburban.

But you can spend a full week in Glacier, IMO. The park is huge.

Whitefish is the touristy ski town of the area. Kalispell is the bigger hub. There is good food all over, but depending on your taste you may enjoy what Whitefish has to offer. My favorite bar grub is Bulldog. I lived in Whitefish the last 2 years but in October bought a house in nearby Columbia Falls. If you need recommendations let me know!

I thought about staying the whole week, but my wife will be pretty pregnant, so I'm not sure how tired she will be from hiking everyday for 5 days.

Take the helicopter ride over the park...Well worth it...Also, rent a boat, a little 25 hp john boat type, on Lake McDonald which is in the park...Very beautiful but a little cheesy...
