Cozumel is across the water. PlayaCar has a nice outdoor shopping area for clothing and souvenirs, a lot of restaurants too.
XCARET is a short distance.
LINK XCARET

you can even go towards Cancun for about 20 mins or so at Puerto Morelos LINK Puerto M

Alot.......many many bars, restaurants, and shopping in Playa, Xcaret is close but I prefer Xel-Ha better and since it's closer to Tulum you can go to the ruins for a few hours. If those ruins don't interest you Coba is about another hour or so from Tulum and those ruins can be climbed. As someone said head up to Cancun for the day or ferry across to Isla Mujeres for the day.

To clarify. You have to go to Cancun to take the ferry to Isla. From Playa del Carmen you can ferry to Cozumel. Some great little dive bars are on Cozumel if you're willing to rent a jeep there and explore a little. Try to hit Cozumel on a day with no cruise ships in town (this can be difficult).

I go to Isla from Puerto Juarez (outside of Cancun)
...Isla is great.
Be careful exploring, I would stay to the main roads and not plunge into the remote wooded areas.

FYI, one of my favorite activities done MANY times is the JUNGLE TOUR by boat. RESERVE ahead of time and EARLY in the day as possible in the morn. Most fun, best value

We just get a Jeep and head to the tip of Cozumel where all those great little beach bars are.

On Isla you can explore the entire island. It’s very safe.

The cartel blew up the Playa - Cozumel ferry this week

Just to clarify, the ferry that was bombed happened last week. Another bomb was found on a separate ferry yesterday.

Both attributed to cartel, personal vendetta against the mayor and/or ferry company.

US has issued a travel warning for the area and forbid US employees from using commercial ferries.

quote:

The US Embassy and Consulate in Mexico says that due to a photograph circulating on social networks of the alleged bomb, the US has forbade employees to use any of the Playa del Carmen to Cozumel tourist ferries until further notice.

Well that is scary. I stayed in Playa Del Carmen a few years ago(at a resort within walking distance of the ferry) and we enjoyed it.

We did notice the big shopping area on 5th avenue there had lots of fully armed security roaming the premises. Used to be that the cartels left the tourist areas alone for the most part. Guess that isn't the case anymore.

Crazy times down there in "safe zone" of Playa. Have been on the ferry to several times to cozumel and the pier. Did have plans to go there later this year but will probably go elsewhere.
