The wife and I are planning a little week long vacation in October. 5 days in DC and two in Asheville.
What are some of the must-do things in each place? We've come up with a little list of things to do when in DC. And the list for Asheville so far is drink beer and look at the scenery . We will be staying Downtown in both cities if that helps.

Have you ever been to DC before? If not, do the major monuments (Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, FDR, WW2, Korea and Vietnam). Do a Capitol tour (not sure how difficult it is to get WH tour slots these days).
I personally could spend several days inside the Smithsonian buildings and really want to go to the NASM branch at Dulles; have not been to DC since it opened.
I would also suggest the US Archives to see the documents that founded the country (if they are still legible after being shite on by Congress/Presidents/etc. for so long).

As far as Asheville -
1) go to Grove Park Inn - either grab drinks or dinner at the sunset terrace and soak up the views. Or just enjoy the history. If you or wife enjoy spas, top 25 spa in the country
2) check out Curate - great tapas - reservation ahead of time
3) wicked weed is a must
4) biltmore is pretty impressive
5) if like hippie shopping, downtown Asheville has it
Enjoy - we just got back from 4 day weekend in Asheville - stayed at Grove Park.

I was in Asheville a couple weeks ago. Went to about 13 different breweries and such.
Still not sure what to think of it.

My absolute favorite of the major sites in DC is Arlington Cemetery

Not sure what your travel dates are... But Oct 9 is the Army Ten Miler... 34,000 runners will be running the 10 mile course passing many of the popular DC monuments. If you are in town that weekend, check out the course at armytenmiler.com. It is a pretty popular attraction held every October. Thousands of active, retired, and wounded military will be running along with thousands of family, survivors and friends in rememberance of fallen soldiers. Almost everyone is running in tribute of someone else. It's a pretty cool thing to be a part of, even as a spectator.

If you are flying out of Dulles, go to the smithsonian air space museum that's at Dulles. Much better than the one on the national mall. Best thing is there are lockers there to store your luggage and a shuttle bus that runs every 10 minutes between Dulles and the Museum.
