Back in the day when I was physically able to ski, often we would drive to Leadville, ski at Ski Cooper, spend the night in Leadville and drive over to Vail and ski the next day. That was 40 years ago and of course it was expensive back then even with a military discount lift ticket.

I would stay in Cascade Village. Try to avoid the gondolas at the main base during the holidays

I love ski cooper. It’s extremely limited for better skiers, but I’m not sure there is a better place to teach young kids to ski. They can’t get lost, lift lines don’t exist, enough terrain to occupy kids ready to tackle their first few days of real runs. The drive to ski cooper is also just so pretty.

You are spot on with your comments about Ski Cooper. As a beginner, that was the perfect place for me to learn. And you're right. I never experienced a wait longer than 30 seconds to get on the lift.

We were supposed to be there Christmas week last year, but due to a family emergency, had to push it back to the first week of Jan. Turns out,we had much better ski conditions. The snow was late arriving in 2021.

We planned to stay in the village, but ended up on the bus route. The busses pass every 20 min. What’s great is there are two separate lines running in opposite directions, so technically busses pass every 10 min. Let’s say there are 20 stops on the route and you are at stop 15 and the village is stop 1. You want to catch the red line (I think); so you only have 5 stops to get to the village. On your return, you will take the green line.

Ticket prices are flat if you order an Epic pass ahead of time. Going that week, you may have to buy the no restrictions option. It was just under $400 for 4 days of skiing per person and would have been $329 if you didn’t have to ski on restricted days.

Make restaurant reservations early!

We rented from Vista Bahn which was right next to Gondola one. You can leave your skis and boots there for free overnight which made travel easier.

No doubt I would rather stay in the village, but it’s workable off site.

It's where I learned to ski. Going to get my little one out there either this year or next to learn.

Made that Minturn to Leadville drive many times. Never gets old.
