My son (16) is in a wheelchair and we're looking for vacation ideas. Have been to Disney multiple times (pretty accommodating for a wheelchair), but looking for someplace different.

All ideas are welcome

Disney is likely your best option. Very accommodating. Museums are typically multi-floor with elevators. From experience, my recommendation would be DC. Subway friendly. Too many museums to see. The Naval Academy is nearby in Annapolis. Virginia is littered with Civil War battlefields, which can be toured by car. Those are my first thoughts. Will chime back in if I think of more.

DC definitely. Chicago strikes me as another big city that would probably be easier to get around in a wheelchair, than say New York. Lots of big wide sidewalks, which aren't as madly congested as NYC, and still a lot of great museums and other attractions.

The Grand Canyon would be a good outdoor experience to go along the rim.

What are his interests? Sports, art, history, nature?

Also, budget?

Don’t do Disney again simply because it’s easy. Go into the real world and help to show him that people navigate in chairs all over the world.

—DC, definitely. Many metro stops are elevator equipped, and the Metro system info online is pretty comprehensive. So you can plan ahead to get around town. All of the major sites on the mall are wheelchair accessible, with wide sidewalks and lifts and ramps. Bonus on DC is that it’s an affordable town for tourists, as the museums and malls are free. All have accessible restrooms too. Trivago has a nice article on wheelchair accessible DC for tourists: LINK

Philly was really nice b.c. the majority of what you are going to see is in the Market Street area. Lots to do in compact area. Art museums are on the other end of Market but still accessible.

Atlanta has the Marta to get around on. Also CNN, Coke, Aquarium, College Football HOF, Braves game in the Spring.

St. Louis. If he can transfer out of the chair he could still ride elevator up to the top of the Arch. Great zoo. Cardinals game in Spring.

Also, if you think he can handle the motion, take him deep sea fishing. He can still catch from the chair.
