For the snorkelers, do you prefer the full face or traditional snorkeling gear? What about recommendations for kids?

I've never used the full face, but my kids have never had any trouble with traditional gear.

All of the Northshore beaches are nice. Our favorites were Denis, Gibney/Openheimer, and Francis. Not that any of them are crowded, but we found these to be less crowded than the others.

Regular snorkel gear here.

There's decent snorkeling on Trunk Bay. If you charter a boat for the day and do the BVI there is excellent snorkeling to be found around Norman Island. We call one of them the Aquarium. Monkey Point is very good as is The Indians and Devil's Bay which is at the end of the path you take to walk through The Baths.

The Baths are swim in and swim out so be prepared but it's pretty easy. If you kids are newbies I would take them to The Aquarium at Norman Island as it is a sheltered bay and the water stays calm.

I strongly suggest asking the captain for a noodle. I’m a decent swimmer and thought nothing of jumping off the boat and swimming in. Didn’t quite go as planned. Had a dry bag that was making it harder to swim, started to panic and had to be helped in. It’s not a close swim. No chance I was attempting to swim back. Caught a taxi to the dock on the other side of the island to board the boat. If that didn’t happen I was fully prepared to live there.

Reminder for you on snorkeling- shave your upper lip with a razor the morning of. I had a bit of stubble and just could not get a good seal on the mask which was annoying. They had Vaseline on board which did help for a time, but in hindsight I wish I would’ve just shaved.

ETA: Looking at St. John and St. Thomas

Stay on St. John over St. Thomas if you love beaches.

St. Thomas feels more like the hood in paradise.

I recommend renting a car at the airport in St. Thomas. If you don't then you will have to get a taxi to take you across the island to the ferry port. The taxi service charges like $25 a person on way. It will then cost you $10-15 per person for the family to ride one way on the ferry to St. John. Then you might need a taxi at the St. John port to get to your rental car. Most places require you to reserve a car for a 3 day minimum.

The roundtrip cost to take a car from St. Thomas - St. John on the ferry was like $60 which is a much better deal and more convenient than the monopoly taxi system they have on the islands.

we rented on St Thomas, forgot how much it cost for a week or so. Maybe $1000? The place for car rentals is in the terminal, and you walk across the street to get the car (kind of). But don't' be confused with driving out of their given they have the same vehicle configuration as us, but drive on the wrong side of the road
