I am planning a trip with my wife to fly to Europe. I've been many times, but I have never gone first class. I have a lot of reward miles and I'm wondering if its worth the extra miles to upgrade to first for the flight to Europe. What can I expect amenities wise? What do the seats look like? etc..

Depends on what carrier you fly and what equipment. Where are you going and how many miles do you have? How many pax?

The current United business product is not that great, if you can use your miles to book a business class ticket on a UA partner airline (Lufthansa, Austria, SWISS, Air Canada, Turkish) you will get much better bang for your buck.
As far as what to expect, google (airline name) business class review and read the reports. Usually great detail and pictures.
Expect a lie flat seat, excellent multi course meal, plenty of good wine and spirits, club access at the departure and transfer airport.

Yeah exactly. Can't know what to suggest until OP specifies his destination at least and what his mileage balance is.
Overall Lufthansa F is the best you can get in Star. 110K miles each way. Booking is a bit tricky since they only release awards space 1 week out.
After that, I would just stick with Biz. Possibly on Air Canada, SWISS or Turkish. 80K each way.
Lastly, Singapore Biz is worth a shout. 2 routes - JFK-FRA or IAH-MAN.
I would not bother with United J/F.

I like United First when you can get on a 777 or 787.

Flew United Polaris Business Class on a 787 to Europe recently. I thought it was definitely worth the miles. Google will tell you more but the lay-flat seats and 787's humidity system leave you refreshed after the long flight.

Unfortunately, you just flew the Polaris soft product. The hard product does not go into service until March and only on 1 route: SFO-HKG. Not sure when and where the other routes will start but it will be the end of this year. And United only took delivery of 14 new 777s with the hard product installed. It is going to take them years to retro fit the existing 777s and 787s and put new aircraft into service. Once that happens - by all means. Until then, United premium cabin is a joke compared to other carriers.

Have flown Business class on United and also British airways dozens of times over the past few years for work. If you guys like to drink then I would recommend British airways on a nighttime flight, the flight attendants disappear and open the curtains and it is a free-for-all for all the snacks and food and drinks you want at your disposal.
