There's a puddle jumper from Belize City to Ambergris Cay. It's not an easy flight path and appears even worse than it was pre-COVID. For us it was a direct flight to Guatemala City and then a short flight the next day to Ambergris Cay. We did have to overnight in Guatemala City the last time we went.

I’ve flown AA and United/continental. Never had any problem getting there. Houston is a little over 2hrs. After immigration and customs, you check in with airline, we always use tropic air, go back through security and relax with a rum punch from Jet’s bar. Assume it’s still open since he passed away. The flight takes about 15 minutes unless they go to Caye Caulker first. When you book your local flight try and get it about 45 minutes after landing. Will be plenty of time to connect. If you take the ferry, you’ll have to taxi there. Takes somewhere around 1-1/2hrs. Have fun

San Pedro is not what it was about 10 years ago, it went from a sleepy chill island to a very busy one. I would recommend staying in Caye Caulker.

That runway is sketch AF on Caye Caulker. I was copilot that day, and was kind of worried for a minute there.

It’s been 5 or 6 years, but we did Jackson, MS - Houston - Belize City - Tropic Air puddle jumper. Everything was pretty easy. Just give yourself plenty of time coming back into The States. I think it was a solid 2 hours from the time we touched down till I was able to get to a Whataburger in our terminal.

Both islands have changed so much. Doesn’t look anything like when I first started going down there 20 years ago. San Pedro traffic is like Baton Rouge, except with golf carts.

There’s a ferry that runs every hour or so. Get a taxi from the airport to the ferry port. It’s slow but probably safer than tropic air or whoever runs that puddle jump service.

The problem is that the hidden gems get pointed out on travel forums now and people flock to them. We just have to get out there and find more because the cat is out of the bag on the ones we triumph on this forum.

Yeah, I started going in late 80s... no golf carts to be found.. We had some houses (Caye Caulker)there for years, but ultimately sold them ~ 2006 or so.. I've only been back one time since then.. In 2017..

Piggybacking on this, about to go to San Pedro next week for my HM. AirBnB'd a house on the south side of Ambergris Caye.

Anyone have experiece or recommendations on day excursions or tours on the mainland?

Stay on AC, visit Caye Caulker.

That’s a private fishing tour right there on AC with a guy named Clem Caliz. You’ll go start early in the morning diving for conch shells and he will make you consch ceviche right there on the boat, then you’ll go fishing and whatever you catch he takes you to a small tractor private land on the north end of the island and I’ll cook your fish for 10 bucks a person. It is an awesome experience. There should be some photographs of all of this up in the sticky thread
