Tell me about Oahu.

I’ve been to Maui but not Oahu. We are having to scramble to cancel our Europe trip and possibly book Oahu on short notice. Super cheap flight.
So I know not that much. What would be the best area to stay outside of Waikiki (we will probably spend a few nights there and a few nights elsewhere).
Tips? Things to see and do? Restaurants? Negatives?
Thanks. Having to scramble at the last moment.

Maui is much better.
Oahu is very touristy and commercialized.

Yeah I get that. And I loved Maui. But...this is scrambling to find a new destination and losing some money on the cancelled trip.
So that’s where the flight deal is for now.
So just trying to make the best of it.

If you stay at Waikiki - stay at the Hilton if you can. Their beach and Fort Derussy beach next to it are the bomb compared to the chaos that is the main stretch of Waikiki. I can't speak to lodging outside Waikiki.

Tips?
You will be really pleased every time you leave Honolulu. The rest of Oahu is just like you expect Hawaii to be (except everybody at Haleiewa packed in a too small area).

Things to see and do?
Diamond Head. Pearl Harbor. We actually didn't get to Dole, but we passed it every time we went to the North Shore - with a little better planning, we could have fit that in. I didn't want to keep a tight schedule, so that didn't happen.

Negatives?
Honolulu is New York City on the beach. Waikiki is a very nice shopping area right on the most crowded beach you ever saw in your life.

You will be fine going to Oahu. Not sure how long of a trip but getting away from Wakaki is the ticket do a quick tourist tour and get out and sight see the Northshor and around the Island. Where are you staying? My favorite restaurants were Kaka aka Kitchen at the Ward Center its everything on styrofoam clam shells but its great lunch and breakfast. I like Roys at Hawaii Kai and sit outside for happy hour 5pm. Mai Tais and appetizers 5 bucks a pop and a fantastic sunset. Waimanalo beach is a great place to spend the day pack a lunch. Get a book on hikes and there are some short walks up in the hills that take you along the spines of some of the interior mens and to waterfalls. You have to look for info. Museums are nice.

I would try to find something in Kailua (maybe an airbnb or something?). Waikiki/Honolulu is very populated and touristy.
Things to do:
Pill Box hike in Lanikai
Lanikai Beach (can also rent kayak nearby)
Kailua Beach
Maunawili Falls hike
Northshore/Pipeline (watching surfers, food trucks, etc...)
Hanauma Bay (snorkeling)
Koko Head hike
Makapu'u Lighthouse hike/beach
Rent a boat at Kaneohe Bay
What we like to do is wake up and go for a hike in the morning, grab some lunch, and then go hang out on the beach in the afternoon.
ETA:
Get "real" poke from Tamura's (it's weird because it's a liquor store but their poke is good). Fatboy's has traditional Hawaiian plate lunches, there is also Keneke's which looks like concession stand but had better garlic chicken, IMO. I wouldn't go out of my way to go to Keneke's if I was closer to a Fatboy's, though. Moke's Bread & Breakfast for breakfast.

My cousins have a beach house not far from Turtle Bay. The North Shore area is great and away from the touristy parts.

North Shore has very surprising lack of places to stay.

There is only Turtle Bay
It's the country part of the island
Best beaches and mellow like Maui

North Shore. That is all.

Avoid the Polynesian Cultural Center at all costs! Run by the Mormons...thus, no alchohol. I know folks who went on a tour there and were stuck all day.
When we were in Oahu we drove by it on the Kamehameha Highway (on our way to the North Shore), waved at the folks going in there, and laughed and laughed.

Kailua Beach
Stayed in a beach house there a couple of years ago. Beautiful to say the least and lots of little restaurants and bars off the beaten path.
Waikiki is worth spending a day or two in just to people watch.

Inter island flights are pretty cheap

Yesterday I booked 5 nights at the Westin in Kauai for $650 (refundable).
Never been to Kauai let alone Hawaii. Y’all got anything for me?

Ya Kauai is awesome. It's like Jurassic Park (because it is).
Gotta see Waimea Canyon
