I wouldn’t visit St. Thomas. It’s a necessary stop to get to St. John.

St. John is my favorite beach destination. Last time my wife and I went, we stayed in an AirBnB on the Coral Bay side. It's a 5-10 minute drive to Maho or Francis Bay so you can easily beat any crowds and find good parking. We also discovered Hansen beach where you can rent paddle boards, etc. We didn't go there, but figure it will be nice for the kids when we decide to bring them along.

Mr Sausage knows what he’s talking about at least when it comes to the BVI. ( messing with you a little. You’re one of the more level headed posters on TD)
St Thomas is good for a painkiller at the airport and that’s about it. Get to the BVI as quickly as possible. And, there’s little better than sailing around on a catamaran for a week. An entirely higher level of trip than being land based even if it’s the best, most expensive resort imaginable.

The older I get, the less excited I am about Caribbean destinations. St John is great, but it can be a hassle with ferries, the roads, lack of decent restaurants, and blackouts the last two times I was there.
I'm starting to do all of my beach vacations in Europe.
Sicily, Sardinia, Malta, and Corsica are my favorite beach spots in the world. The water is just as clear, the temps are usually better, there's no third world bullshite, and when you are ready to get out of the water, the wine is grown a mile away and the food is world class.
Sardinia is the spot no one in America knows anything about, and it's the best beaches in the entire world, and the food options are world class.
Just my opinion.

Horizon out of Nanny Cay is cheaper than Moorings with very nice cats, but no power cats.
It is absolutely true that this type of trip is so much better than just staying at a resort.
However with a captain, it would and travel costs it is going to exceed 8k.
