Searching through the board I can't find much on SW Louisiana. Family is going visiting some friends but making a vacation out of it this month. Trying to find some good activities the kids (under 10) will enjoy and get a feel for the area as they've never been. Lafayette/New Iberia & Lake Charles areas.

Looking for recommendations and new ideas, here are some things we're considering:
- Swamp tour (no idea which one to pick)
- Zydeco meal (not sure who's doing these right now)
- Avery Island but it appears to be closed
- Visit a crawfish farm (there are some tours I've seen)
- Something outdoors - could use recommendations on good nature trails

Any tips on touring through the area or ideas on activities are greatly appreciated. Hoping the move to phase three opens up things a bit as I know it's festival season

Towards Lafayette...Vermillion Village is a good spot for the kids.

Vermillion-ville

In SWLA....check out the Creole Nature Trail. Lots of stops along the trail for Nature sights.

Creole Nature Trail

Depending on your time and weather, you could always book a fishing trip with a local fishing guide.

Hackberry Rod & Gun

Lacassine has a Rum Distillery (Bayou Rum) made from the local sugar cane. Cool spot to see if you happen to pass it.

Lake Charles has some good restaurants open.
Crying Eagle - local brewery w food
Luna's - downtown
Darrells - famous poboys

Higher end - all have LA flair seafood w traditional steak house style food.
121 Artisan Bistro
Calla
Mazens

Both Casino's are open and have solid restaurants inside, pools, lazy rivers, etc.

Fair warning....due to 2 hurricanes and covid, lots of places are either still shut down or under construction. The area looks quite different than "normal" times. That said you can still find some fun things around here.

Jeff Davis Parish visitors center has the gator chateau where the kids can hold baby alligators. I think they also offer a crawfish farm tour through the center as well.

SWLA is destroyed man. Can’t imagine what the Creole nature trail even looks like right now. I think you’d be hard pressed to fill more than a day here currently.

That said, the kids would enjoy crabbing. Grab a bunch of turkey necks, some thick line, a couple ice chests, and find a wharf in Hackberry. Bonus points if you have access to boiling supplies. Can make a nice little evening out a crab boil and some zydeco outside in March. If all else fails, could always just buy shrimp and boil that.

Thanks all for your tips, really helpful! I know the area got hit bad and figure that we should throw our vacation money at an area that could use the support (even though a lot still shut down from covid/storms).

check out Seafood Palace. It is a older, well known restaurant that just opened back up and they definitely could use the patronage (get there early like 430-5pm because the locals will be there in force this). TaD's is a newer Cajun restaurant in town with quality food and good management. If you want some Creole food although its mostly BBQ check out Famous BBQ. They might have not opened up the main restaurant but their Sandwich spot right next door is selling their Boudin and cracklins. Try the soft and spicy cracklins as they are a very unique item.

Some kid friendly places that have outdoor activities are Rikenjacks and Crying Eagle Brewery.

Although the nature trails and most outdoor activities are not accessible in Cameron Parish you can always grab a daiquiri to-go and take a drive. There are plenty of migrating birds and alligators that you will be able to spot. Maybe drive down to Rutherford beach. Like one of the other posters mentioned "crabbing" the ditches along Rutherford beach road are perfect for that. You might not catch much but the experience of strait lining crabs is a must.

I want to Say that the Creole Nature Trail Adventure Point is open. This is in Sulphur (Carlyss area) on the side of town that will lead to Rutherford Beach Etc....

thanks for visiting SW Louisiana. The community could definitely use any influx of $$$

Safe travels!

Good to know they’re back up and running. Best seafood gumbo in LCH IMO.

You've gotten some good suggestions so I don't have too much to add.

If you want to get off the beaten path a little check out the Lorrain Bridge, it's kinda famous in the area for photo opportunities.

If you want some good cajun prairie food, C'est Bon - FB Link in Mermentau is my absolute favorite place to eat boiled seafood or simple cajun dishes.
