I completely agree about Athens.
You really only need one day there. Use the extra 4 days to visit one of the other awesome islands. My wife and I did Mykonos and Santorini and absolutely loves both. We went in May though so the crowds weren’t in full force yet. I can see how the crowds could really ruin some of the experience.

We will use our Athens time to visit the local sites and also take 2 or 3 day trips to Hydra, Temple of Poseidon/Athena and maybe another to Delphi/Arachova etc. It's more a father/son making memories trip, then two guys drinking and partying. He's 19 and never been further than Canada.

I just think you are going to be bored in Athens if you are there for 5 days, even if you take a day trip or two. I think you and your son will find any number of islands way more enjoyable than the extra days in Athens. You don't have to get drunk and party at Mykonos or Santorini to have a good time. They are both beautiful, beautiful islands with plenty to do. I think the same could be said for Naxos and some of the other islands less overrun by tourists.
