Going for the first time in April. Renting a villa...about a mile and a quarter from Gustavia and just less than a mile from St Jean. From St Maarten, we’ll fly in on Winair. Thinking about taking the ferry on the return. Renting a car through Budget. Short of that, don’t have anything planned. Any tips, thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

Enjoy. A word of advice on the ferry. It's nicknamed the St. Barf's Ferry. Sit up top in the open air and take dramamine an hour prior to departure. The ride there was the most disgusting ferry ride I've experienced.

Wonderful island.

Yeah, I’d heard it was pretty bad going but “smoother” on the return. Just looking for different experience. You’d fly back as well?

I would. It’s only better on the way back because the first stop people make when they get there is the pharmacy.

I guess you’ve also heard about the runway and landing? Interesting it is.

Fly both ways. It’s a lot easier especially if you have any sort of tight connection.

St. Barths is one of the more interesting and special places in the world, for my money at least. April probably a good time to visit as it switches to low season around then but most places probably still open.

Think the best advice is this. Wake up. Head to the boulangerie. Grab some breakfast, maybe a sandwich for beach, pack a cooler, drive to a different beach everyday. Spend a few hours on the beach. Have a glass of rosé or a Carib. Maybe grab lunch. Head back to villa, nap, lounge by pool. Either cook or go out to dinner. Maybe one or two nights head to one of the festive bars. Smoke cigarettes. Drink lots of wine. Speak in awful French. Get a sunburn.

Avoid Le Select their burgers suck. Black Ginger is really good. Maya’s to Go also good. L’Isola good pizza. For me Gouverneur perhaps my favorite beach in world. Could spend a lifetime there.

Enjoy

Keep in mind that the St. Maarten airport was devastated by Irma. THey just reopened the terminal building a month ago. I'm not sure how efficiently it's operating right now.

This was all pre storm, and anecdotal, but generally I found the airline that runs the flight between SXM and St. Barths, just waits until all the passengers have arrived, made it through customs, and are ready to go. I’ve always scheduled the flight for about an hour and a half after we land in sxm. On way back give yourself 2.5 hours.

Two more questions.....
1. As it turns out, we’ll have our anniversary while there. Any particular place with views, good food, service and ambiance that i’d Need to reserve now?
2. Parking tips in Gustavia? I hear it can be a bit of a cluster.

It can be hard to find a parking spot in Gustavia, but just drive around and one will open up. If it is during the day use your blue parking card that should be in the glove box or you will get a ticket

In April you probably don’t need to make reservations before you go, but I would suggest making them a day or two in advance if you have a special place you want to be. Also, even for casual dinners it is appreciated if you call and make a reservation, even if it is just an hour or two before you get there

I’ll give you a better tip. Your villa is probably going to have a banging view. Hire a private chef to come in and cook for you and the spouse. There are a lot of them and I have had great experiences doing this.

They show up, cook a great meal, clean and leave all for about the price of going out. My suggestion is to arrange this for the night you arrive. Stop off and grab some wine, maybe a bottle of Ricard, and you are set. But if you want to do it on your anniversary that would be cool also.

Parking is tight all over but somehow it all works.

PS last week’s NYTimes had a 36 hours in St. Barths feature. Covers a lot of ground including the obligatory Le Select/Jimmy Buffet trope although Buffet denies it and they describe the burgers as “islands best bargain”
