I was returning from Seattle to NOLA yesterday and got stuck in Oakland overnight due to Southwest glitch. Should SW offer me compensation for getting home 24 hours late. I was using Rapid Reward points I purchased from Chase UR points if that makes a difference. This is the first flight I booked a flight and I am not familiar with what my rights are.

Yes they should. If you arrive at your destination more than 4 hours late, due to airlines error/not weather related, they owe you compensation. $400 is what you should be shooting for.

It was due to a SW glitch. You can definitely get compensated for that. Make up some story about how you missed an important meeting with a client or something.

Also, depending on which card you used to pay the $5.60, you may be entitled to a daily allowance, reimbursable by the card's trip interruption insurance.

I used Chase Sapphire. I am not sure how I would make a claim. Also I booked tickets for my wife and daughter. Today we were not booked on the same flight and I am in San Diego waiting to fly to San Antonio and the NOLA. My wife and daughter were booked on flight to Dallas to San Antonio and then NOLA. Just found out their flight is cancelled and still waiting to hear what their net flight will be. This is screwed up and I need advice on how to handle.

Avoid flying an airline that doesn't have an interline agreement.

Sorry. Had to.

Get home, then when things calm down from the debacle, call Southwest's Corporate Customer Care line. Explain to them precisely what occurred and each inconvenience that took place.

If I had it to do over I would not have used SW. Just found out that SW says that the next available flight is tomorrow at 7 PM leaving Oakland.

I would help more but the doors are about to close on my dca-ord flight. Simple advice is to keep checking southwest.com for individual flights (don't look for oak-msy). Try oak-dal, hou, atl, tpa, fll, mdw, bna. Basically anywhere that southwest flies to out of nola nonstop. Sometimes they dont post available connections online if they are over 4 hours so you have to search by individual segments

Eta: availability will be constantly changing after an event like this so check often

I got back to NOLA about 7 PM last night, only about 18 hours late. My wife and daughter are still in Oakland right now. They have a direct flight scheduled to leave Oakland at 7 PM tonight. Hopefully no more delays or cancellations. I noticed that SW added around 5K RR points to my account for the two cancelled flights yesterday but none for the 3 cancelled flights the night before. Is this standard and should SW pay for hotel and eats for my wife and daughter since they will be getting about 48 hours after first scheduled flight. What is the process when I call SW about this lousy experience?

They should. Within reason.

Call or email. If you call, wait until they're "back to normal" and either way do so politely and keep it brief but informative. Dates, Original Flight numbers, Names, Confirmation #'s etc.

Thanks Golfer. I will make sure my wife gets home and call next week after things calm down some.

When you get lemons make lemonade. My wife and daughter spent two unexpected days in Oakland but they took advantage of a chance to see a little of San Francisco and ride the trolley cars. Just have to make the best of a bad situation.

That's what you do when handed a bag of shite. SW has been good to me in the past..but If I was separated from the family like that ...I would not be as nice as you are.
