NYC is close to Lake Placid (still kind of far) but I think Denver is your best bet.

Denver or San Fran.
Mile High Stadium is a nice venue. I have not done so but apparently there is a train of some sort from Denver to the close ski resorts (Winter Park, I think), which only takes an hour or so.
The travel from SF to Lake Tahoe will be longer like 3-4 hours. But could probably stop in wine country along the way. Will have to rent a car.

Funny. That was my kid's college selection criteria. Ended up in Utah.
