Silk Road: Traveling from Istanbul through the ‘Stans in to China?

I’ve been watching a lot of Silk Road documentaries. It has to be much easier now than 20 or many hundred of years ago, but it still seems dangerous and challenging. Has anyone here done it?

I met a Brit in India who had driven and camped it, as I think he crossed Afghanistan. Was in Russia at tail end of trip to fly home when the hockey team crashed so 2011?

Funny story… without going in to detail. I know someone who was a diplomat in Pakistan just before 9/11. We’re talking secret notes passed on horseback kind of stuff.

I mean, Americans can't travel in Iran right now, except in groups that have a security monitor, and even those tour visas are very difficult to get.
