Planning on 4 or 5 nights in Edinburgh, and 3 in Inverness. Will spend a day in Glasgow and maybe one in Stirling.

I like castles and churches and whisky and scenery.

While in Edinburgh be sure to go to Edinburgh Castle, Arthur's Seat, and Royal Yacht Brittania. Arthur's Seat is a spectacular view. It is a tough hike to the peak but there are different trails that you can take, some of which are easier than others. You'll fall in love with Edinburgh.

If you're in Inverness then check out Loch Ness. There isn't a ton to see but it's beautiful and the scenery all throughout the Highlands is breathtaking.

Ditto on Edinburgh and Inverness.
Rent a car and do some sightseeing if possible. Wife and I meandered around with no particular objective and found some really fun places that aren't terribly touristy.
Check out the Orkneys, as well.

Saint Andrews is also not terribly far from Edinburgh so I would suggest making a day trip out of it. Even if you aren't a golf fan it's a fun little city with beautiful views of the ocean.

No car, at least not in Edinburgh. Will train up to Inverness and maybe rent a car for a couple days. Not sure. I have identified a couple of small-group guided tours where I can see some cool stuff and let somebody else do the driving. One of them will hit a few distilleries in Speyside. Can’t wait.

If you are traveling by train, the route from Edinburgh to Inverness goes through a small town called Pitlochry. Stop there and tour Blair Athol Distillery. While in Inverness, hire a guide to do a tour of Culloden and Loch Ness. Will take most of the day but worth it. Glen Ord was a nice distillery in the area.

Edinburgh is one of our favorite cities. Good night life, great restaurants, lots of history. Definitely hike up to Arthur’s Seat if the weather is nice. The Castle is a must. Both of those things will take a half day each.

If you enjoy the outdoors, take the train from Inverness over to Kyle of Lochalsh (very scenic ride) and then rent a car to tour Isle of Skye. We spent 2 1/2 days at Skye and wanted 2 more days. Lots of great hikes and views. Portree is the largest town there were most people stay and there were good restaurants to be found. I think Talisker is the only distillery on Skye.

I am working on booking a return trip. I fell in love with scotland last year. We actually stayed in Dundee and loved a place called Minnie’s (real name is Speedwell Inn). I played golf two days so that took half the trip. We ended up having an emergency and came home but also stayed in Dufftown. I enjoyed having a car and exploring. DO NOT drink and drive as the limit is like 0.02 or something.

Watched flights for a month or so and finally got a dip. $911 a person roundtrip to Edinburgh. The Aer Lingus flight I wanted was filling up, so I moved.
