We are just starting to plan our honeymoon this summer and looking for some recommendations. Tentatively we are thinking:

Fly into Rome for 3 days 2 nights. We will be attending a mass at the Vatican where the pope will bless our marriage on day 2.

3 hour train to the Amalfi Coast, 5 days 5 nights

This is where I'm having troubles.
We will then fly to The South of France where we will have 7 more days and nights. Provence is a must for the lavender bloom. Then we want to relax in the wine regions for a few days before going to Paris To fly home. Here are two options:

Provence > Burgundy > Paris
Provence > Bordeaux > Champagne > Paris

I'm thinking option 1 because of it being less traveling and I don't want to be rushed during the last week of our trip.

Again, nothing is booked just trying to lock in our itenerary.

What type of wines do you like? Wine touring in Europe is not quite like touring in say Napa (although it can be in some locales)

Bordeaux is more our style with the bolder reds, and the sauv Blancs. But we are also fans of Burgundys Pinot Noir.

The soon to be wife is a huge fan of sparkling which would be great in Champagne. Again just worried about the travel.

Why not just stay in Italy? Plenty of excellent wines to sample, you can take it easy & make a leisurely tour of various regions.

If you like bold reds and you are going to Provence, I would just hang around the Rhone valley for a few days. Go up to Orange, check out Chateauneuf du Pape for a day, drink some great reds and different whites for a day or two, then zip up to Reims and taste Champagne.

I didn't realize that was so close to Provence. For some reason I thought that was much further north west.

Can you tell me more about Reims? Any other suggestions theoughout Provence, Orange, etc.?

Reims a great city. Historic cathedral, close proximity to WWI battlefields if that interests you. Most of the big houses have a presence in Reims. Tattinger tour is pretty awesome. Caves were originally dug by the Romans. Get a guide and have them take you on a tour to some Grower houses.

ETA CdP was the first style of wine I drank and had the aha moment so to speak. So those wines and the syrahs and roses of Provence have a special place in my heart. There is a main road that travels south from orange (iirc - and in and of itself a great city to visit) and it leads to CdP vineyards and beautiful wineries. Chateau La Nerthe has a great view and gorgeous grounds, not to mention awesome wines and cellars to explore. But really when in Europe its so easy to find great wines at the corner cafe or gas station that intense touring isnt really warranted.
