My wife and I, and another couple are planning a vacation for August/September of this year to visit Croatia. We want to road trip down the coast hitting as many hot spots as we can. Preliminary plans are to fly into Zagreb and make our way down to Dubrovnik over the course of 8-10 days.

I've found a few posts by searching here, but wanted to see if anyone could make any recommendations for this trip. Thanks in advance.

This. We went a few years ago and it is spectacular. It can be crowded but we arrived in the afternoon and went into the park around 2 or so....they close at 4 so most people go in the morning. We had the park to ourselves.

As for driving, I didn't do that but did take buses. The roads are mountainous, narrow and twisty so it takes a while to get anywhere. And I think you have to go thru Bosnia-Herzgovinia (sp)at one spot....the bus stopped there for a bathroom break. I don't recall seeing much coast while on the bus as most of the roads are inland. I know they are working on a better highway but not sure how much of that's is finished.

Side note: Just found out today my great grandfather was born in Croatia.

Plitvice is on the must see list for sure. The coastal highway is E65. I believe its the longer route than taking the tollways, but worth it for the scenery from what I hear.

I was in Croatia a couple years ago and want to go back and do something similar to what you have planned.

I missed out on plitvice and Krka but I suggest checking them out.

what I really want to do is ferry from venice to rovinj, then to pula, on to Rijeka, check out krka and some other islands(PaG), onto Zadar, then split/Hvar, then Dubrovnik. Ideally I want to spend 2 months and check out Zagreb plitvice as well as Sarajevo and some of Montenegro

E65 is not along coast, not much to see. Coast road is worth the trip, but can be really busy and slow. Skradin, take boat to Krka, see Zadar, sibinik, trogir, salona, split. After split, stop at omis, brela, and ston (eat oysters). If you take your time you will see lots of places to stop. A lot depends on what you want to do. History, museums, hiking, climbing, etc...

If E65 is not on the coast, then google maps is deceiving. From the north down to Zadar it appears to be right on the coast to me.

E65 is the interstate that pretty much runs through unpopulated areas on the east side of the dinaric alps. It didnt even exist my firstbtrip there. You will occassionaly see the adriatic on the other side. It is fastest way to get from a to b, but you wont see much in between. Do stop at the rest area on northbound e65 at Skradin, great view. The old coast road is 8 (i think), slow and winding, but great views and towns to stop. Compare to taking i10 along coast or hwy 90.
