I'd go to DC early in summer, before it gets too hot. DC can actually be a great place to visit then, as thousands of lobbyists, ambassadors, etc. leave when Congress is not in session, and all the students at DC's 12 universities go home. It can be easy to get around, and many restaurants are not crowded.
DC is amazing for kids. Keep in mind they're one of the few cities whose vaccine mandate doesn't have a negative Covid test allowance. Your children of age will need to be fully vaccinated, including boosters.
*Not making this a vaccine debate - just a friendly reminder to keep this in mind when it comes to the major cities. Have been having to worry with it for work travel so its fresh on the brain.
