Sailes Fire Tower is torn down but the stone caretaker’s building is still there and the Forestry Dept has an office and equipment yard there. I don’t know about Friendship Fire Tower, if it’s still there, but I’ll try to remember to check it out.

The old Hilltop grocery on LA 9 in Bienville reopened last year, by the original owner’s grandson, with gas, deli, etc. You could stop there for anything you didn’t have if you’re coming in that way. There’s a Dollar General in Saline now and a Family Dollar in Castor too, in addition to the General Store. You are right, there’s not much else here in Bienville Parish. Also if you’re coming up LA 9 from the south, Briarwood Nature Preserve around Readhimer is very nice, at very northernmost Natchitoches Parish near Bienville Line. check their FB for admission and hours.

When visiting Avery Island, check out Rip Van Winkle Gardens and the Bayou Teche Museum in New Iberia. A drive to St. Martinville is the Acadian memorial and other historical sites worth checking out once.

Every Louisiana citizen should hike Driscoll Mountain at least once in their life.

I literally was just looking this up. I didn't know it was called Briarwood. I was googling Caroline Dormon home. I went there not many years after she died with the same Mamaw and aunts. I'm glad to see it's still preserved and open to the public.

Chicot has newer cabins. Not sure how new but they are very nice, especially the ones that on piers over the lake.

I think Hodges Garden is still closed.

quote:

After a half century of operations, the gardens and cabins were refurbished by the state and opened to the public on March 20, 2008. Camping facilities became available a few months thereafter. But after nine years, the state, with a tight budget, chose not to continue to operate Hodges Gardens. Instead, the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation & Tourism and the Office of State Parks will effective October 1, 2017, return ownership to the A. J. and Nona Triggs Foundation.

Hodges Gardens supporters peeved....

Probably not something to keep kiddos interested, but I found this place pretty cool.
