Just landed in Denver and have a rental car.

Planned to drive to Estes Park and hike/hang out around Estes Park Area through Sunday. Due to the fires they have closed RMNP.

Debating if we should call an audible and head somewhere else. Rental car gives us options.

Anyone have any suggestions or should we just head to Estes?

TIA

Just make a simple loop:

Colorado Springs (Garden of the Gods)
Manitou Springs (Pikes Peak)
Canon City (Royal Gorge)
Salida (Hot Springs)
Buena Vista
Leadville (Old mining town)

Weather is not on your side this weekend. The forecast already called for it to be cold AF and high winds, but the snow forecast has gone up dramatically, 12” is the recent conservative estimate for the fun spots and 6” in Denver through Sunday.

The fire that closed RMNP went from 6k acres to 120k overnight.

I'm not sure you can even get to Estes right now. On 36, you have to be a resident to get through at Lyons. 34 is closed between Estes and Fort Collins. You could maybe wiggle up to 7 through some back roads, but why would you even want to be up there?

Have you been to Sand Dunes? You could set up shop in Cuchara. Spanish Peaks area is pretty damn cool, less traveled and not on fire.

I'd be hesitant to get too far west as snow may hamper the drive Sunday.

How long are you there for? Moab is an easy drive if you have the time you can go to Arches.

If you have an SUV, take Boreas Pass towards Como. You should get some good leafing pics.
