Puebla looks like a very cultural city with great food. Anyone here been? Kicking around the idea of taking a trip over Easter to there or Mexico City. Seems to be a very budget-friendly getaway.

I enjoyed it.
Nice view of a volcano.
Good discotecas .
Lots of great local art
Less gang violence.
Not too far from some temples.
Some serious mezcal.

I lived there for 2 years.

It is a university city with a lot of young people.

Many old churches, one has the body of a priest that died in 1600 on display.

Food is good.

It is the site of the Cinco de Mayo Battle.

It has the lowest crime rate in Mexico.

A suburb, Cholula, has been inhabited for 3000 years and has one of the largest Pyramids in the world.

It has a good climate. Pretty dry around Easter, high 75 low 45.

Any questions?

Think it would be a more relaxing vacation than Mexico City? Main interests are food, drink, and laid back bars over discos/clubs. Flight prices are the same from MSY.

Much more relaxing.

The Puebla airport is like the Baton Rouge Airport.

Mexico City is massive and way easier to make a wrong turn in.

Puebla will have smaller crowds at cultural sites.

If you want to see the major sites in Mexico City, there are guided day tours from Puebla for reasonable prices. Mexico City is about 2 hours drive away.

In the historic center of Puebla, there are cafes where you can sit all day and people watch. I recommend Hotel Royalty.

There is also a plaza called Los Sapos where there are small live music bohemian type bars.

Thanks for the information. It’s much appreciated.

Opinion on the best neighborhood to stay in for the things I mentioned?

You want to stay in the historic center. Hotel Royalty or Hotel Colonial. Both are hundreds of years old.

Hotel Royalty

Hotel Colonial

Prices are in Pesos. 1000 pesos is about 55 Dollars.

Puebla, Mexico?

Puebla is a great city. Spent about a week there few years back for my brothers wedding. We stayed at this little hotel where each room was named after a different lady. El Sueno We were right near all the old churches and could walk around to restaurants. My SIL's family brought us around to see other parts of the city as well as the night life. No English is spoken for the most part so be prepared. If I'm not mistaken the elevation of Puebla is higher than Denver. We went during March and the weather was perfect.

You should visit the churches in and around Puebla. I really liked the Church of Santa Maria Tonanzintla in Cholula.

The the first public library in Mexico is located in Puebla and is worth seeing. Biblioteca Palafoxiana.

There's a large flea market on either Saturday or Sunday and is a must.

You could look into a tour company and go see the Pyramid of the Sun and Moon. One of them they let you climb almost to the top but it's a workout at that elevation.

Everything was pretty cheap, safe and the city has a very European feel to it. You will need Peso's as nowhere I visited took US Dollars. There's plenty of ATM's to pull Peso's out so either convert a bunch of cash at the Airport or just pull it out as you go.
