Munich/Salzburg is really easy and you can hit a lot of places from there. There's a direct Munich/Charlotte flight.

I feel like I’d want to hit Italy and southern Germany / Austria for sure. I guess it would come down to convenience of getting from place to place. I know the wife would probably want to go to Greece.
Italy is a two week trip to itself.
Germany Austria you could easily spend two weeks and not see anywhere close to enough. Germany is much bigger and more diverse than you’d expect.
Greece if you want to enjoy the islands and do say 3 of them, you need 10ish days. There’s the logistics of travel between.
I know I’m a broken record on here and some don’t agree, but I always say to simplify if you can. Don’t go to 10 places in 14 days.
Give yourself time to enjoy places. Give yourself some relaxation and time to just wander.
If you try to experience all of it you’ll experience none of it.

Is your limitation time or money? If money, then I'd start wherever the flight is least expensive. In reality, almost all of Europe is fascinating for a first-time American visitor. I've been to 21 European countries and enjoyed all of them.
My advice is to go early in the summer, if possible. If you're thinking about Southern Europe in particular. By late June, everything is scorching hot, and the tourist crowds are out of control. Please don't try to see places such as Rome, Barcelona, Venice, or Paris in July. If you do go in July, consider Eastern Europe, which is well undertouristed for the interesting sights there, or consider Scandinavia.

I would say to do a week in each country, that may be your best bet. I've done diy and travel agency, both have their pros and cons. My vote would be to see Germany and Italy, been all over Germany and love going back whenever I can. Only been to a couple of cities in Italy and would love to go back to see more.

Innsbruck. Centralized beautiful location in the Alps. Munich, Salzburg, Venice, Grossglockner, Zugspitze, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Berchtesgaden, Zell am See, and much much more all within a couple of hours.
Also never seen anyone mention it here, but Zakopane, Poland.
