I completely understand. I just think once the kids see all the stuff to do, that's what they'll want to explore.
Check out some mountain towns and pull up VRBO/etc and you'll see some examples.

There are dozens of towns that are beautiful that may not have made lists yet. If you like scenery, local dining, rafting, fishing, hiking, etc, there's something for you.
I'd probably find something easy to get to it from where you are, though. Good luck.
For the record - I would take my family to Pigeon Forge for a weekend, but I'd fully expect to stay at a waterpark resort, go kart, putt putt, eat, see a show, etc.

Well if you aren’t set on Pigeon Forge why not look at NW Arkansas and hit the Ozarks. It’s about 5 hours closer to you and not as touristy.

There are a lot of options, but it is easy to just wing it at the same time.
If you are into rides, Dollywood is a good time. I have never done summertime, so no opinion on the water parks or wait times in the summer. But in the winter, even when the park is packed, the wait times are not terrible. Plus their app is very user friendly.
Check out Ober Gatlinburg, you can spend an easy day there as well.
I have a younger family, and we enjoy Anakeesta
There are also a ton of great hiking options. Stop at one of the Visitor Centers at get the hiking maps. They will grade them by difficulty and give an average completion time.
VRBO or Red Awning for your cabin needs. Just make sure to check the location out on google maps before booking. Sometime the pictures will make it look like you have a ton of privacy, then you get there, and you can have a conversation on the balcony with your neighbors without really raising your voice.

VRBO
I noticed they won't give me exact locations until after I book.
I'd like to know what's around me to avoid the proximity if possible.
I'll check out red awnings.

None of them give you exact locations, you just have to get a little creepy in google maps
Most of the time you can find the area in VRBO (or other sites), then just search the major cross streets until you zoom in close enough to find the exact cabin. Then you can see the area and how close the other cabins are. Sounds crazy/stalkerish, but I started doing that when I booked a cabin and found out that my neighbors can basically watch you while you are in the hot tub.

Are you me??? lol.
I do all of this too because a lot of times their pictures are very deceiving. I’ve started messaging the owners and asking what is it near (if they won’t give me an address) so that I can start my search.
Been burned too many times where it looks secluded but it’s basically cabins on top of each other.

I can give you some recommendations for the Smoky Mtns. I can include ranger programs, hikes and areas to visit.
