Holy crap, I literally live at Bainbridge St at 3rd St
There is a subway but it doesn't go everywhere. Septa is ok, just check the schedule. Will you have a car? I personally think Uber would be the way to go, just one group may get to a place 5-10 minutes later.
There are lots of beautiful places to walk and see. Obviously around Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell it's just gorgeous and clean. Philly is built around food and drink, but I'm sure there are lots of great things for kids. There are parks literally everywhere, some big and some small.
As someone mentioned above, the Franklin Institute currently has a Jurassic Park exhibit that is supposedly amazing. It'll only be here a couple of months, but there is usually always a pretty cool exhibit.
I walk to Spruce Street park almost every other weekend. Sometimes they have vendors and it's very lively, sometimes it's dead. In Fairmount Park, which is probably 15-20 minute drive, is a Please Touch Museum...Here is an article with some things already mentioned. Things To Do With Kids In Philly
I can't do it this weekend, but next weekend I can walk down to the place and scope out the area for you (which I've already walked but I'll make sure to be more detectiveish)

Also, not sure if you know this, but there is a Whole Foods a block away. I go there often. Whole Foods doesn't build locations is shitty areas. So that should make you feel good

Thank you very much, Butt. I appreciate the suggestions. Maybe I'll run into you IRL if we're both wearing LSU gear.

Yes we will have a car. How is parking around the city? Uber is a good option, but we'd have to get 2 Ubers (4 adults and 6 kids) and they would both have to have car seats. So that's my worry with Uber.

Parking can be a bit of a hassle. During the day it's fine when people are at work, but the evening and night it's somewhat more difficult. I know of some areas that are relatively empty 90% of the time and some that are constantly packed. I personally have a parking garage which literally saves my life. They also have meter maids EVERYWHERE, so make sure to bring change for meters.
Honestly what I would do is get a $15 visitor parking pass. It's good for 15 days and you can park basically anywhere in the area and you're good. Residents get them annually and they're like $35. $15 is pretty great considering you won't get a ticket.
This website can tell you more about it than I can. And if you have questions you can call or email them Residential Parking Permit

Butt, The house I'm renting has an attached 1 car garage and an additional 1 dedicated street parking spot. Are you saying to get the visitor parking pass to park in the neighborhood or to park around the city? What parts of town does it apply?

Oh nice! Didn't know that. In the city, most places you will park will probably have some type of meter

So you were talking about parking in the neighborhood, but not really around the rest of the city.

OK. Thanks for all the great tips.

As a visitor/tourist, no I wouldn't try to deal with the Subway or SEPTA buses. Check out the Phlash. It runs in the tourist season and makes a loop to all of the sites. Center City is pretty walkable. From where you are staying, you can walk to the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Betsy Ross House, US Mint, and some other historical sites. Personally, if I were going to Philly for just a day or two, that's what I would do. Franklin Institute, Academy of Natural Science, Museum of Art, Please Touch Museum, etc, these are all really cool places, but IMO, what is the first thing you learn about Philly? Well, after Will Smith. So what is the 2nd thing? History. Take it in and enjoy it.

I think we'll definitely do these

We will have 6 young kids with us (6, 4, 3, 2, 1, & 3M) and only 4 adults to watch them all, so unfortunately, these might be out and we'll probably have to hit these on another trip when the kids are older.
