Thinking of taking my dog with me on a couple of trips this summer. However, I've never brought a dog on a plane, I was thinking of just buying a second ticket for the dog but could I use his kennel as a carry-on? The dog is less than 15lbs and mild manner but I will still give it a quarter of a Benedryl or something to make sure it sleeps.

United sells a pet ticket for storing dogs under the seat as a carry on. I believe it's $125 each way.

Lot of other airlines do that.

I've done it before. I'm not a fan of faking a disability to avoid the charge (not that you are).

Of course practice with the carrier and try to plan things where the dog won't have to shite at 30,000 feet.

Just leave the dog with friends/ family while you’re gone. I don’t think the dog or other travelers will enjoy being on a bunch of flights with you.

It’s really ridiculous how many people fly with dogs for no real reason. You sit in a large US airport for 15 minutes and there will be 20 people with dogs walk by. When I’m in major airports in other countries I never see people bringing their pets. I don’t understand why many Americans are so obsessed with their pets that they can’t be away from them for a weeklong vacation.

I hate dogs because of it. people with dogs are so inconsiderate. I was at the vet yesterday and was outside waiting and a lady walked out and let her dog shite a huge pile of shite right where everyone walks. people with dogs are disgusting.... not to mention the nasty arse white women that kiss dogs and let them lick on their lips and in their mouth. oh man so disgusting.

leave him at home.

but if you are going to bring it on an airplane, don't let it shite walking in the terminal, and pretend it didn't just shite in the middle of a major walkway, and then walk away leaving a huge pile of shite in the walkway.
Happened to me at Reagan. I think the owner of the dog that did that should have been pinned up to the wall and the two people that stepped in that shite would get to fling that pile of shite at them, and then use their clothes to clean the shite off their shoes.

If you're flying to spend the next 6 months somewhere, sure, I can understand bringing your dog. But for a long weekend or weeklong vacation? Spare me. My dog-allergic husband thanks you to leave Poochie at Camp Bow-Wow for the weekend.

We flew transatlantic with a large breed (looked like he had some grehound or similar in his lineage, though kinda mutty) wearing a service vest...he lay down very quietly in the bulkhead aisle and was better behaved than most of the tourists on the flight. But dog still triggered about 10 sneezes & popping a benadryl.

Driving vacations are for dogs & people.....

People get their panties in a wad over dogs on planes. And no, I don’t bring a small dog on a plane.

I think the lack of reliable animal-as-cargo options has created the service dog issue. You can assume that a large dog on a leash in the terminal is a “service dog”. Small dogs that aren’t service dogs are supposed to be in their carrier at all times, but small dog owners see service dogs walking around so they think it’s ok for their carry-on dog to walk on a leash (and shite and piss in the terminal). Airlines and employees don’t want to deal with the sensitive issue so it goes on unchecked. But all of this is not the dog’s fault. For as many a-hole owners that clog up the Pre line while their dog stroller is inspected, there are many dog owners that follow the rules and the dogs fly with no issues.

If the dog is used to the carrier and quiet/calm in social situations, bring it.
