Heading to Paris with the family this Summer (all adults now).

I’ve been diving through old threads on Paris and the surrounding areas. We’ve identified the Loire Valley as a day trip we definitely want to make. We’re looking to take the bullet train into town then go from there. Head back to Paris that night.

Does anyone have any recommendations for guides/drivers in that area? We’re looking for someone that can pick us up in town and take us around a few Vineyards/Chateaus. Mixed Groups of 6-8 are fine. It seems like if you aren’t staying over night you definitely need someone to get you around.

We got a great recommendation from a bunch of you on TD for Anna’s Cool Tours in Florence when we went years ago. For those that are familiar, we’re looking for something similar to that.

Any and all recommendations for Loire Valley (and other day trips) are appreciated! It’s our first time and we don’t know where to start.

Hard to do just as a day trip. Can’t remember if there is a fast train to Tours or not. The LV is a big, spread out area. Maybe hire a driver to take you to a couple of the places closer to Paris.

The LV is great. It’s just hard to do much on a day trip.

Far too much to see in a day, and my trip was in 1992, but my favorite stop in the area was actually at Chinon. The castle there was a real fortress, not a palace, and it's where Joan of Arc led the French army out to attack the English. The castle was interesting, and I really enjoyed the town. I remember eating some ice cream from a little shop near the river in late afternoon as the low sun reflected on the water and feeling very much at peace.

You’d want to stay at least two nights. The Loire Valley is a region not a town. Everything is spread out. One chateau could take 2-3 hrs to tour the house and grounds (usually the most impressive part). It’s an itinerary you’d want to take it easy and chill, not rushed. Especially if a winery is involved.

Here’s a link of the best chateaux to give you an idea of the region. For reference, it’s a 2 hr drive from the first chateau to the last chateau. LINK

As others have mentioned, it's not really a day trip destination. It's better to rent a car and a villa and spend three days exploring the area at your leisure.

If you only have one day to spare and you really want to check this off your bucket list then you have a few options:

1. Book a (long) day tour with a company out of Paris. These usually involve riding in a minivan for 3 hours down to Chambourd and Chenonceau with a lunch stopover at Amboise then riding 3 hours back to Paris. Obviously you spend most of the day in a minivan. Not ideal on a vacation.

2. Take the early morning TGV train down to St Pierre des Corps station in Tours (about 1 hour) and pre-book a private driver or tour operator out of Tours. This would give you a little more variety and time. A link to a local tour operator: LINK. If you book a private driver you can maybe find 3 or four Chateaux near each other and arrange your own itenerary. But they can be pretty spread out. That's also going to get a bit pricey I would image.

You might also consider going to Versailles or Chantilly instead. Both are much more manageable as a day trip from Paris and you scratch that grandiose itch.

Thanks this is helpful and definitely gives us a lot to think about.

Now I’m wondering if we should give up a day/night in Paris to get over that way. Curious if anyone has any opinions, as we’ve never been to Paris before. I know there’s a lot to do, but is 6 days in just Paris too much? That’s why we were considering the day trip.

I love Chinon, it's still the way you remember it.

6 days in Paris is a lot if you want to see France. Once you leave Paris it’s beautiful countryside. We book ended our France trip with Paris. Traveled to Normandy and the Loire Valley in between (by car).

Our highlights. I’m not sure you can do this without a car.
-We stayed at a chateau on the Loire River called Le Prieure. It has beautiful views and has a Michelin star restaurant. Also has an awesome bar with a view of the river. I don’t remember anything being crazy expensive.
Le Prieure
-We arrived too late to eat at the hotel so they recommended a restaurant down the road that serves a local menu. I’m so glad we visited this place! It is a restaurant located deep in a limestone cave. They grow their own mushrooms in the cave. The best I could describe the food/restaurant is brick oven pizza mixed with hot pockets. You fill freshly baked wraps with steaming hot mushrooms, meat and veggies. It was a very cool experience!
La Cave aux Moines
-Chateau and Gardens of Villandry. Unforgettable experience. Huge gardens. Something out of Alice and Wonderland.
Villandry
-Chateau if Chenonceau. Chateau built over a river. Looks like a Disney fairytale.
Chenonceau

FYI, once you leave Paris and are out in the countryside English speakers are hard to come by.

There were small wineries and vineyards everywhere. Would love to go back but we were with my father-in-law and brother-in-law who could care less about wine.

I would not say that 6 days is too much for Paris, but Paris both does and does not encapsulate France. If I wanted to experience France, I would definitely consider two nights in the Loire Valley.
