Dumb this down for me… how does this work?

If oversold, they offer extra money to get on a later flight?

Also- if a plane has 100 seats, why would they sell 105 tickets??

I don’t fly a lot, but would take advantage is possible when I do

Yep, basic statistics. The airlines know that a certain percentage of people won't make their flight for numerous reason so they will overbook hoping to fill up. They aren't losing any money, they just give a voucher for a ticket which takes up a seat on an undersold flight.

I've volunteered probably 10 times and I've never been chosen.

A couple of years ago I took an ATL-SLC, bump on Delta for prepaid visas $1000. (4 $250 pp visas)

Since then I have been offered 3 x, but all 3 times were time sensitive outbound and I had to pass. I am flying this weekend, and HOPE I get a $$ offer. No issue either end of the trip, so coming or going I am down for a bump! Fingers crossed….
